Blue Rose

Formed as an all-female bluegrass ensemble, Blue Rose challenged the genre’s conventional male-dominated structure. Its members included Sally Van Meter on dobro, the renowned fiddler Laurie Lewis, banjoist Cathy Fink, Marcy Marxer handling guitar and mandolin, and bassist Molly Mason. The ensemble issued only one album, the self-titled Blue Rose, via Sugar Hill Records in 1988, with lead vocals supplied by Fink and Lewis; among its tracks was a swinging rendition of Hank Williams’s lesser-known composition “Blue Love.”
