Biography
Body/Head pairs Kim Gordon, the bassist and vocalist formerly of Sonic Youth, with guitarist Bill Nace to probe fresh terrain in experimental music. The pair relies chiefly on spontaneous guitar textures built from drones and feedback, extending Gordon’s no wave origins while foregrounding her abilities as an instinctive and emotionally direct player across projects such as the intense 2013 release Coming Apart and the quieter yet forceful The Switch from 2018. Those boundaries widened further once Aaron Dilloway contributed electronic interventions to the 2021 album Body/Dilloway/Head.
Nace, whose résumé includes Vampire Belt with Chris Corsano plus sessions alongside Jessica Rylan, Paul Flaherty, and Thurston Moore, joined Gordon for the project’s first appearance in 2011 on Fractured Orgasm, a limited cassette issued by Ecstatic Peace. The following year Ultra Eczema released two items: the single The Eyes, the Mouth/Night of the Ocean and the duo’s version of the standard “Fever” for a compilation. Feeding Tube also put out Glare Luring Yo that year, a live recording of a concert shared with Gate, Michael Morley’s project linked to the Dead C.
Recorded at Sonelab with producer Justin Pizzoferrato, the September 2013 double album Coming Apart marked their first full-length statement and presented a modestly refined take on the abstract method. The 7" The Show Is Over/The Canyon followed in 2014. November 2016 brought No Waves, assembled from excerpts of their 2014 Big Ears Festival set in Knoxville, Tennessee. Returning to Sonelab with Pizzoferrato produced July 2018’s The Switch, a restrained yet absorbing song cycle. November 2021 yielded Body/Dilloway/Head, a Three Lobed Recordings entry in the label’s 20th Anniversary series that fuses sustained tones and edits supplied by noise artist Aaron Dilloway.
