Biography
Initially intent on a career behind the camera, Montreal native Jamie "Bran Man" Di Salvio assembled a musical collective without any deliberate blueprint while hustling to cover living expenses by helming videos and documentaries in his hometown throughout the mid- to late '90s. Early adolescent passions for DJ sets and remixes gradually steered him into production territory, leading directly to the 1995 launch of Bran Van 3000.
Nearly twenty lesser-known Montreal figures drawn from music circles, production desks, vocal booths, and hip-hop networks coalesced around the project, supplying the attractive quirkiness that defined the group from its outset. Soul chanteuse Stephane Moreille aligned with vocalists Jayne Hill and Sara Johnston, while the lineup further incorporated DJ E.P. Bergen, MC Steve "Liquid" Hawley, jazz drummer Rob Joanisse, guitarist Nick Hynes, bassist Gary McKenzie, and ex-Doughboys member John Kastner within BV3's revolving rotation. The collective merged trip-hop textures, electronic ambience, and indie-rock attitude on the 1998 debut Glee; its single "Drinking in L.A." climbed various college charts and drew notice from Canada's MuchMusic.
Breakup speculation circulated widely by late 1999, accompanied by reports that Ric Ocasek would helm the follow-up. Fresh momentum arrived with the new millennium, however, as BV3 partnered with Beastie Boy Mike D and Grand Royal on Discosis, slated for a mid-2001 release.
