In the realm of French dance music, Télépopmusik carved out a distinctive path after the models set by Air, Les Rythmes Digitales, and Dimitri From Paris. The group’s central trio of Fabrice Dumont, Stephan Haeri, and Christophe Hetier came together in 1997 once the members had exhausted their time in previous projects. Dumont had earlier launched the dream pop outfit Autour de Lucie, Hetier had built a following as the DJ Anti-Pop, and Haeri had performed with Planet Zen. Under the Télépopmusik name the three placed their emerging electronic style on “Sonic 75,” a track featured that same year on the SourceLab compilation. Their acid house electronic jive reached a stronger level on Genetic World, issued by Capitol in April 2002. The debut single “Breathe” circulated among clubs for several months before gaining mainstream traction in early 2003 through its placement in television spots for the Mitsubishi Outlander SUV. That February the trio launched its first American tour. Angel Milk surfaced two years later.
