Nitin Sawhney ranks among the leading producers and songwriters shaping Britain’s electronic and fusion landscape, while also working as an actor, author, and screenwriter. His productions fuse electronica pulses with striking Asian textures inside trip-hop and jazz contexts, generating singular and intense sonic works guided by his unmistakable artistic perspective.

He completed his schooling in Kent, England, amid the aggressive activities of racist groups, and turned to music to confront entrenched racial divisions. After studying law at Liverpool University, he settled in London, where he and Sanjeev Bhaskar launched the radio program The Secret Asians, which later became an award-winning television series.

Although deeply engaged in television, Sawhney maintained his focus on music. He joined James Taylor for a series of U.K. dates performed with Taylor’s quartet, then formed his own ensemble, the Jazztones, appearing at concerts headlined by DJs such as Gilles Peterson. A subsequent partnership with Talvin Singh produced the Tihai Trio; afterward Sawhney issued his first solo album, Spirit Dance, on his own label in 1993. Outcaste Records signed him shortly thereafter and released Migration in 1995. A year of sustained work yielded the follow-up Displacing the Priest.

During the same period he composed scores for prominent television programs and theater productions while remixing material for Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. His fourth album, Beyond Skin, appeared in late 1999 after extensive touring across the U.K. and Europe that included appearances with Sting. His fifth studio album, Prophesy, followed in 2001 and drew enthusiastic critical response. Throughout the 2000s he released Human, Philtre, Love Undersound, and One Zero, as well as the mix albums In the Mind of Nitin Sawhney and Fabriclive.15.

By 2015 Sawhney had received four honorary doctorates, two Ivor Novello nominations, and two U.K. Asian Music Awards, the same year his tenth studio album, Dystopian Dream, came out. In 2017 he accepted a lifetime achievement award from the Ivor Novello Awards, issued Live at Ronnie Scott’s, and supplied the score for the Andy Serkis-directed film Breathe. His twelfth studio album, Immigrants, arrived in 2021 as a direct sequel to Beyond Skin and paid tribute to immigration around the world.
