Born in New Delhi, Bally Sagoo spent his formative years in Britain and quickly earned a place among the more dynamic figures shaping dance music there. Blending bhangra, hip-hop and ragga, his productions also drew on an Indian film-music heritage that surfaced most clearly with the 1995 album Bollywood Flashback yet remained a constant undercurrent, reflecting the presentational conventions long established by that tradition. The all-inclusive method often highlighted by observers outside India suited Bally Sagoo’s own instincts, allowing him to embrace it fully. In September he joined Devissaro to compose music for fresh dance pieces by Daksha Sheth and Roger Sinha; these works were staged by the young South Asian company Yuva under the shared heading Tongues Untied during London’s annual Vivarta Festival. A major recording contract with Columbia/Sony was announced in 1994, underscoring both his adaptability and the label’s confidence in his prospects. Rising from the East appeared two years later, followed in 1999 by Sountracks: For Your Life.
