Biography
Making waves internationally through the enduring 2009 chart-topper “Down,” English R&B singer/songwriter Jay Sean carved out a pioneering path as a British-Asian artist who crossed into mainstream success. Albums like his breakthrough All or Nothing showcased a signature mix of polished vocals, pop-oriented songcraft, and prominent featured artists that fueled widespread global appeal and a run of consecutive Top 40 entries across both the U.S. and U.K. charts well into the following decade. After issuing the silver-certified single “Make My Love Go” in 2016, he kept dropping new tracks such as “With You” alongside Gucci Mane and Asian Doll, “Days Like This” with Martin Jensen, and “Ride It” featuring Larissa Lambert.
Born Kamaljit Singh Jhooti on March 26, 1981, in London’s Hounslow borough, he started rapping at age eleven before shifting toward R&B, partly due to his Indian background limiting opportunities in the U.K. rap scene. In 2003 he joined 2Point9, a comprehensive entertainment outfit focused on British-Asian talent including Rishi Rich, and debuted that same year with “Dance with You (Nachna Tere Naal).” Crafted by Rishi Rich and spotlighting fellow 2Point9 signee Juggy D, the track climbed to number twelve on the U.K. singles chart and became a substantial domestic success. Capitalizing on that momentum, Sean secured a substantial recording deal with Virgin Records and abandoned his medical studies at Queen Mary’s School of Medicine and Dentistry. His first full-length, Me Against Myself (2004), reached the U.K. Top 30 and yielded two Top Ten singles in “Eyes on You” and “Stolen,” while achieving even greater traction in India, where it topped the charts and earned multi-platinum status, aided by his cameo in the 2005 Bollywood film Kya Kool Hain Hum.
Although already established abroad, Sean parted ways with Virgin to issue his sophomore effort My Own Way (2008) independently through 2Point9 Records. Despite multiple delays, the project debuted at number six on the U.K. albums chart—surpassing the performance of his prior major-label release—and produced the U.K. Top 20 hits “Ride It” and “Maybe,” with the former also resonating in Poland, Portugal, Romania, and Bulgaria. Attention shifted to the American market in 2009 after he aligned with Cash Money Records; the partnership launched via the single “Down,” which featured labelmate Lil Wayne and anchored the November release All or Nothing. Late 2010 brought “2012 (It Ain’t the End)” with Nicki Minaj, followed a year later by the mixtape The Mistress. His second Cash Money album, Neon, arrived in July 2013 and enlisted Rick Ross, Ace Hood, and Busta Rhymes.
Departing Cash Money in 2014, Sean unveiled the mixtape The Mistress II that November and later issued The Mistress II EP, which contained acoustic renditions of select tracks. He resurfaced in 2016 with “Make My Love Go,” his first Sony single and a reunion with All or Nothing collaborator Sean Paul; the track marked his initial U.K. chart entry since 2011 and received silver certification. October of that year saw “Thinking About You,” a joint effort with Hardwell. Early 2017 delivered “Do You Love Me,” co-produced by Rock Mafia. Additional singles followed across the next two years, among them 2017’s “What You Want” with Davido, 2018’s “Emergency,” and the 2019 Gucci Mane and Asian Doll collaboration “With You.” That same year introduced “Lonely,” which preceded “Surma Surma” in early 2020. Sean revisited the U.K. Top 10 later that year via the BBC Radio 2 charity single “Stop Crying Your Heart Out.”
Continuing into the 2020s, he released further singles including “Gone (Da Da Da)” with Imanbek, “Days Like This” alongside Martin Jensen, and “Ride It” featuring Larissa Lambert.
