Biography
An exuberant rapper and vocalist whose outsized charisma and cross-genre reach have turned him into a fixture of mainstream pop, Flo Rida built his reputation on buoyant dance anthems. He claimed the late-2000s party crown through worldwide smashes such as the first Grammy-nominated single “Low,” which featured T-Pain, and “Right Round,” which introduced Kesha; both tracks appeared on the Top Ten U.S. albums Mail on Sunday (2008) and R.O.O.T.S. (2009). Into the following decade the Floridian sustained global momentum when Only One Flo (Part 1) (2010) and Wild Ones (2012) delivered five more platinum-certified hits, among them the David Guetta team-up “Club Can't Handle Me,” the Sia-assisted “Wild Ones,” and “Whistle.” After the 2015 EP My House yielded the major successes “G.D.F.R.” and “My House,” Flo Rida issued a steady stream of singles, highlighted by the gold-certified “Cake” (2016), “Feels Right” (2024), and “Confessions” (2025). The two most recent tracks extended his audience by pairing him, respectively, with Florida Georgia Line’s Brian Kelley and ENHYPEN’s Heeseung and Jake.
Raised in suburban Miami as Tramar Lacel Dillard, Flo Rida began as the teenage hype man for 2 Live Crew’s Fresh Kid Ice. His own crew, the GroundHoggz, surfaced on several tracks of Fresh Kid Ice’s 2004 album Freaky Chinese. By 2006 he was appearing on prominent mixtapes, and the following year he joined DJ Khaled’s “Bitch I'm from Dade County” alongside fellow Miami natives Trick Daddy, Trina, and Rick Ross. Signed to Atlantic’s Poe Boy imprint, he arrived in October 2007 with “Low,” the T-Pain collaboration that held the Billboard Hot 100 summit for ten weeks and earned Grammy nominations for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration and Best Rap Song. That momentum carried Mail on Sunday into stores in March 2008; the set also contained the number-sixteen pop single “Elevator” featuring Timbaland and the number-nine hit “In the Ayer” with will.i.am. R.O.O.T.S., released the next March and subtitled “Route of Overcoming the Struggle,” repeated the commercial triumph, spawning the chart-topping “Right Round”—which served as Kesha’s introduction—plus the number-five “Sugar” with Wynter Gordon and another Top 20 entry, “Be on You” with Ne-Yo; the album itself received a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album.
For his third full-length, Only One Flo (Part 1), issued November 2010, Flo Rida leaned more heavily on EDM, recruiting David Guetta, Axwell, and Benny Blanco, yet retained rap cuts such as the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League–produced “Why You Up in Here,” which added verses from Ludacris and Gucci Mane. The Guetta-assisted “Club Can't Handle Me” reached number nine on the Hot 100, while “Who Dat Girl” featuring Akon climbed to twenty-nine, marking Flo’s eighth Top 40 hit as lead artist. Wild Ones followed, first previewed by the Dr. Luke- and Cirkut-helmed “Good Feeling,” a number-three single, then by the number-five title track with Sia; additional production from Axwell, DJ Frank E, and Avicii kept the project prominent on dance floors. Third single “Whistle” topped the Hot 100 and “I Cry” reached number six; “Wild Ones” earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards. The 2015 EP My House returned Flo Rida to the upper reaches of the Billboard 200 behind platinum singles “G.D.F.R.” (Sage the Gemini and Lookas), “I Don't Like It, I Love It” (Verdine White and Robin Thicke), and “My House,” the first and third of which also entered the pop Top Ten.
Between 2016 and the mid-2020s Flo Rida issued several singles annually while maintaining a steady schedule of guest appearances. A gold certification arrived for 2016’s “Cake.” In 2021 he and singer Senhit represented San Marino at the Eurovision Song Contest with “Adrenalina.” Remaining focused on upbeat, message-oriented dance music, he broadened his circle of collaborators across genres, joining Walker Hayes for 2022’s “High Heels,” Brian Kelley for 2024’s “Feels Right (I Love It),” and, on 2025’s “Confessions,” ENHYPEN’s Heeseung and Jake along with Paul Russell.
