Biography
Among the wave of rappers rising from Atlanta in the closing years of the 2000s, B.o.B carved out a singular lane after securing his first major-label contract at just 17. His unconventional creative choices, set against the familiar textures of Dirty South production, quickly lifted him beyond most regional peers and drew parallels to OutKast, above all the inventive style of André 3000. Commercial recognition arrived in 2010 with the number-one Billboard 200 album The Adventures of Bobby Ray, which yielded three Top Ten pop singles and five Grammy nominations, among them Record of the Year for the Bruno Mars collaboration “Nothin’ on You” and Best Rap Album. Two further Atlantic projects preceded a longer run of releases on the artist’s own No Genre imprint, stretching from 2017’s The Upside Down through 2020’s Somnia.
Although born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Bobby Ray Simmons, Jr. was raised on Atlanta’s east side in the intown community of Decatur. Music surfaced early as a pastime; he studied trumpet and additional instruments through elementary and middle school. While still in high school he obtained management and formed the production duo the Klinic, even placing an original beat with Slip-N-Slide artist Citty at age 15. After his partner departed for college, B.o.B shifted to solo work and issued the hazy, spoken-word tribute to marijuana titled “Cloud 9,” which anchored his first mixtape.
His manager soon arranged an unscheduled appearance at Club Crucial, the venue owned by Atlanta rap figure T.I. The teenage performer impressed attendees with a self-produced track, prompting industry veteran TJ Chapman to join the management team. Within a month that connection yielded a signing to Atlantic and its Rebel Rock subsidiary, headed by Miami-based producer Jim Jonsin. The 2008 single “Haterz Everywhere” marked his Atlantic debut and registered on Billboard’s Bubbling Under R&B/Hip-Hop chart. Shortly afterward, XXL, Spin, and MTV spotlighted him in “Artist to Watch” pieces, positioning the young MC as Atlanta’s next national breakout.
Following additional mixtapes, some issued via a joint arrangement with T.I.’s Grand Hustle label, and guest spots alongside Killer Mike and T.I., B.o.B reached mainstream prominence in 2010. Early that year “Nothin’ on You” featuring Bruno Mars topped the Billboard Hot 100 while “Airplanes” with Paramore’s Hayley Williams reached number two; both tracks appeared on The Adventures of Bobby Ray, released in April. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, earned gold status en route to multi-platinum certification, and scored a further Top Ten single with the Rivers Cuomo-assisted “Magic.” Five Grammy nominations followed, including Best Rap Album for the full-length, Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals for “Airplanes, Pt. II,” and three nods for “Nothin’ on You”: Best Rap Song, Best Rap/Sung Collaboration, and Record of the Year.
Originally conceived as a mixtape, the more assertive yet still pop-leaning Strange Clouds arrived in May 2012 and peaked at number five on the Billboard 200. Its Lil Wayne-featured title track had already become B.o.B’s fourth Top Ten and platinum single; “So Good” and the Taylor Swift duet “Both of Us” also received RIAA certifications. Underground Luxury, released in December 2013, reached number 22 and delivered two additional platinum hits: the brash “We Still in This Bitch” with T.I. and Juicy J, plus the whistling “HeadBand” featuring 2 Chainz. Psycadelik Thoughtz followed in August 2015, a commercially released mixtape that leaned more heavily into rock textures than prior work.
After parting ways with Atlantic, B.o.B established No Genre as his main outlet, also home to Scotty ATL and London Jae. A series of mixtapes appeared through late 2015 and 2016; four of them—Water, Fire, Earth, and Air—were later compiled as the commercial project Elements in early 2017. Ether surfaced that May as the fifth installment and B.o.B’s fourth proper album. The Upside Down, Naga, and Southmatic arrived before decade’s end. Productivity persisted into 2020 with Somnia, followed by the Lost Tapes compilation in 2021. B.o.B launched 2022 with the singles “Vimana” and “Scenic Route.”
