Kid Cudi, known to fans as the self-proclaimed "Man on the Moon," emerged as a Cleveland native who settled in Brooklyn and quickly distinguished himself through introspective lyrics paired with forward-thinking production choices that blended genres in unexpected ways. His rise accelerated toward the end of the 2000s once he joined Kanye West’s GOOD Music imprint, where his debut album Man on the Moon: The End of Day achieved quadruple-platinum status in 2009 on the strength of the multi-platinum tracks “Day ’n’ Nite” and “Pursuit of Happiness.” The follow-up Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager further solidified his commercial reach by moving millions of copies, securing Grammy recognition, and reshaping prevailing approaches within hip-hop. Dreamy beats and a singular vocal delivery defined much of his early work, yet he pursued frequent detours, including alt-rock explorations via WZRD and Speedin’ Bullet 2 Heaven plus a 2018 collaborative project with Kanye West under the Kids See Ghosts banner. Cosmic trap textures marked the 2020 conclusion of his beloved trilogy, Man on the Moon III: The Chosen. Two years later he ventured into animated television with the romantic comedy Entergalactic, whose accompanying album shared the same title. His ninth and tenth studio albums, Insano and the companion set Insano (Nitro Mega), surfaced in 2024 and were trailed by singles such as “Don’t Worry.”

Born Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi in the Cleveland suburbs, the rapper’s trajectory gained momentum after relocating to Brooklyn and aligning with Fool’s Gold, the label run by DJs A-Trak and Nick Catchdubs. That imprint issued the Day ’n’ Nite EP in February 2008, while a Crookers remix circulated widely across blogs and generated substantial early interest. Heightened media coverage, including a Rolling Stone placement among the five best indie hip-hop artists of 2008, added further visibility. Shortly after “Day ’n’ Nite” appeared, Kid Cudi toured with the Fool’s Gold crew at a South by Southwest showcase and later partnered with Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak collective for a North American run.

Once the remixed “Day ’n’ Nite” advanced on the U.K. singles charts, he unveiled his conceptual debut, Man on the Moon: The End of Day, during summer 2009. The widely praised project reached the upper reaches of the Billboard 200 and attained multi-platinum certification. Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager arrived the following year, topping the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and earning platinum status. In 2012 he reunited with “Day ’n’ Nite” producer Dot Da Genius to launch the rock-rap outfit WZRD. Indicud followed in 2013 and incorporated contributions from HAIM, Father John Misty, A$AP Rocky, and Kendrick Lamar.

Without advance notice, Cudi surprised listeners in early 2014 by releasing Satellite Flight: The Journey to Mother Moon on February 25 via Wicked Awesome/Republic; Raphael Saadiq appeared as a guest. The sprawling Speedin’ Bullet 2 Heaven surfaced the next year, adopting a grunge-oriented rock approach reminiscent of the WZRD material. Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin’ returned him to rap-focused territory just over a year later and featured André 3000, Pharrell Williams, Travis Scott, and Willow Smith. Although the set landed outside the Billboard 200’s top ten, it entered the top five on the R&B and rap charts.

The Smashing Pumpkins-sampling “The Rage,” recorded for the Rampage soundtrack, opened 2018. Later that year he reunited with longtime mentor Kanye West to form Kids See Ghosts; their seven-track album emerged in June as part of West’s Jackson Hole, Wyoming sessions for GOOD Music and included verses from Pusha T, Mos Def, and Ty Dolla $ign. April 2020 brought the solo single “Leader of the Delinquents,” a Dot Da Genius production first previewed during a 2012 concert. That same month saw the launch of THE SCOTTS, a Cudi–Travis Scott pairing built around a moody trap beat on the track “The Scotts.” Work also continued on the album Entergalactic, conceived as the soundtrack for an upcoming adult animated Netflix series of the same name. Before the year closed, Cudi delivered his seventh studio album and the final chapter of the Man on the Moon saga, Man on the Moon III: The Chosen. Self-produced and noted for its sleek, occasionally expansive sonics, the record included appearances by Trippie Redd, Pop Smoke, Skepta, and Phoebe Bridgers before debuting at number two on the Billboard 200.

In 2022 he assembled highlights from his major-label solo discography—including WZRD material—into the expansive greatest-hits collection The Boy Who Flew to the Moon, Vol. 1. Additional acting opportunities followed, highlighted by a critically praised turn in Ti West’s horror film X, while he attached himself to several further projects. His own creation, the award-winning animated romantic comedy Entergalactic, showcased his voice alongside those of Ty Dolla $ign, Timothée Chalamet, Vanessa Hudgens, and others, with the accompanying soundtrack featuring production from Dot da Genius, Plain Pat, and Take a Daytrip.

Insano arrived in 2024 as what was described as his final Republic release, spotlighting the single “Porsche Topless” and guest spots from Travis Scott and Pharrell Williams. A surprise companion project, Insano (Nitro Mega), followed within a month and incorporated the previously standalone track “Ill What I Bleed” along with vault cuts “Dose of Dopeness” and “Rocket.” Subsequent singles included “Dreams I See” and the New York-centric “Don’t Worry” featuring Chip Tha Rapper.
