Biography
Jay Rock distinguishes himself among rappers through verses that register as both spontaneous and precisely calibrated. Hailing from Watts, he supplies clear yet gritty storytelling as a central figure at Top Dawg Entertainment, where his independent releases include the Top 20-charting 90059 from 2015 and Redemption from 2018. The latter contains the uplifting “Win,” which received a Grammy nomination in the same year he and labelmate Kendrick Lamar earned the Best Rap Performance trophy for their multi-platinum “King’s Dead.” Following an extended hiatus, Jay Rock resurfaced in 2023 with the rousing “Eastside,” positioned as the lead single for his fourth studio album.
Born Johnny Reed McKinzie, Jr. and raised in Los Angeles’s Nickerson Gardens housing project within Watts, he drew the notice of Anthony Tiffith, who signed him to Top Dawg in 2005. A series of 2006–2008 mixtapes, one of them shared with Kendrick Lamar (then known as K.Dot), preceded Jay Rock’s debut commercial single, the Cool & Dre–produced “All My Life (In the Ghetto),” issued in October 2008 and featuring Lil Wayne alongside will.i.am. Additional mixtape work and involvement with the Black Hippy collective—alongside Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, and Ab-Soul—led to his inclusion in XXL’s 2010 Freshman Class. These efforts preceded the July 2011 arrival of Follow Me Home, released via a partnership between TDE and Tech N9ne’s Strange Music; the project reached number ten on Billboard’s rap albums chart and number 83 on the Billboard 200, aided by the follow-up single “Hood Gone Love It,” again featuring Lamar.
In the interim between solo albums, Jay Rock contributed to “Money Trees” from Lamar’s 2012 Grammy-nominated good kid, m.A.A.d. city. Lamar appeared in turn on 90059, whose title references the Watts zip code; that set debuted at number 16 on the Billboard 200 and yielded the number 35 Hot R&B/Hip-Hop single “Money Trees Deuce.” After recovering from a severe motorcycle crash, Jay Rock joined Lamar, Future, and James Blake on “King’s Dead,” first heard on the Black Panther soundtrack that Lamar executive-produced; the track reached number 21 on the pop chart and achieved multi-platinum status. Redemption, Jay Rock’s third album, arrived in June 2018 through TDE and Interscope, entered the Billboard 200 at number 13, and was further supported by the gold-certified “Win.” Three Grammy nominations followed: “King’s Dead” and “Win” contended for Best Rap Song, while the former secured Best Rap Performance. Subsequent guest spots surfaced on Kembe X’s “Raised a Fool,” Lil Wayne’s “Bing James,” and Problem’s “Nothin.” The Kal Banx-assisted “Eastside” marked his first single in five years when it surfaced in 2023.
