Biography
G Herbo channels his life stories through a raw, pressing, and frequently anguished delivery, standing out as a leading figure among Chicago's drill rappers. Hailing from the South Shore area of his hometown—specifically the district known as Terror Town—he first gained notice under the moniker Lil Herb. His initial project, Welcome to Fazoland, arrived in 2014, paving the way for his initial Billboard 200 placements via Humble Beast in 2017 and the 2018 effort Swervo. Building on that momentum, he notched further Top Ten entries on the same chart with PTSD, 25, and Survivor's Remorse between 2020 and 2022. More recently, he put out the mixtapes Strictly 4 My Fans 2 in 2023 and Big Swerv the following year, where the latter balanced his signature dark intensity with upbeat celebration.
Since emerging in the early 2010s, the Chicago native born Herbert Wright III contributed to a couple of cuts on Lil Bibby's Free Crack mixtape in 2013, a close collaborator. By 2014, he had secured features from Common, Young Chop, and Earl Sweatshirt while dropping his debut pair of mixtapes: Welcome to Fazoland, honoring his late friend Fazon Robinson, and Pistol P Project. He then inked a deal with Cinematic Music Group and issued Ballin Like I'm Kobe as his first release under the label in 2015, paying tribute to a slain friend from two years prior. The year after that saw him guest on Lil Yachty's "Up Next 3."
Herbo unveiled his first proper studio album, Humble Beast, in 2017, which included the tracks "Red Snow," "I Like," and "Everything," and reached a peak position just beyond the Billboard 200's Top 20. A deluxe version followed in 2018, incorporating Chance the Rapper on the remix of "Everything." Partnering with Atlanta trap producer Southside, he released Swervo through Epic in 2018; the project boasted guest spots from Young Thug, 21 Savage, and Chief Keef, entering the Billboard 200 at number 15. The subsequent year brought Still Swervin in February, which landed at number 41, along with December's Sessions. February 2020 marked the arrival of his fourth studio album PTSD, featuring contributions from Lil Uzi Vert, Polo G, Juice WRLD, and A Boogie wit da Hoodie, and climbing to number seven. Much of its material stemmed from therapy sessions addressing his challenging early years, as Herbo noted. Later that December, federal fraud charges were filed against him and associates, which he rebutted via the standalone single "Statement" that month; ultimately, he received a probation sentence.
Early in 2021, he issued tracks such as "All Black," "Really Like That," and "Break Yoself," with several landing on his next album, 25. Dropped in July of that year and named after his age then, it debuted at number five on the Billboard 200. During 2022, he joined Gunna and King Von on charting singles while leading efforts with A Boogie wit da Hoodie titled "Me, Myself & I" and Future on "Blues," both destined for the two-part fifth studio album Survivor's Remorse. Its A Side came out on October 7, 2022, followed by the B Side three days later, incorporating additional features from Offset, Gunna, and Kodak Black among others, and peaking at number nine. April 2023 brought "Raining," a team-up with Yung Bleu and Murda Beatz. The follow-up mixtape Strictly 4 My Fans 2, referencing one from seven years before, charted at number 124 on the Billboard 200. Big Swerv, a collection leaning into party tracks, emerged in September 2024 featuring 21 Savage, Chief Keef, and Sexyy Red.
