Biography
Lil Yachty infuses his tracks with uplifting optimism, hazy eccentricity, and distinctive Atlanta energy, shaping the playful approach he first labeled "bubblegum trap" while emerging as a leading voice in the style often tagged "mumble rap." Within two years of achieving his initial platinum single in 2016, the artist scored a pair of Top Ten albums via 2017's Teenage Emotions and 2018's Lil Boat 2, plus a Grammy nomination for his guest spot on DRAM's "Broccoli." Between those Quality Control releases, his method moved away from deliberately off-pitch vocals and casual rhymes toward a more conventional MC delivery, though his playful wit remained intact. Subsequent projects traced further shifts, from 2020's Lil Boat 3 through the psychedelic rock textures of 2023's Let's Start Here. He introduced the Concrete Boys collective with 2024's It's Us, Vol. 1 and joined electronic producer and songwriter James Blake that same year on the restrained, atmospheric album Bad Cameo.
Miles McCollum entered the world in Mableton, part of the greater Atlanta area, and started gaining traction in 2015 once Drake's OVO Sound Radio spun the eccentric, melodic "Minnesota." True mainstream breakthrough arrived in 2016. That year brought Lil Boat and Summer Songs 2, his opening two commercial mixtapes on the rising Quality Control Music imprint. Lil Boat included both "Minnesota" and "One Night," a hazy party track that climbed to number 30 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart, entered the Hot 100, and earned platinum status. Also in 2016 came featured roles on DRAM's "Broccoli" and Kyle's "iSpy," each of which reached the pop Top Ten, along with a contribution to Chance the Rapper's Top Ten project Coloring Book. "Broccoli" earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration, while Coloring Book captured the award for Best Rap Album.
Yachty kept expanding his catalog of featured appearances, most notably alongside Carly Rae Jepsen on a version of Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock's "It Takes Two," yet he channeled the bulk of his focus in 2017 and 2018 into his first two official albums. Teenage Emotions arrived in May 2017, landing in the Top Ten of both the Billboard 200 and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts and spotlighting the charting single "Peek a Boo" with Migos. He followed in March of the next year with Lil Boat 2, adopting a more classic rapper stance that stressed clearer verses and dialed back the off-key singing. Highlights featured PnB Rock, YoungBoy Never Broke Again, and Trippie Redd, helping the set reach the Top Ten on multiple Billboard lists. That same year Yachty also dropped Nuthin' 2 Prove, which housed "Who Want the Smoke?" alongside Cardi B and Offset and peaked just outside the Billboard 200 Top Ten while hitting number nine on the R&B/hip-hop chart.
A few standalone tracks surfaced from Yachty in 2019. Early the following year he linked with Lil Keed and Zaytoven for the A-Team mixtape, then returned to the Hot 100 as lead artist for a third time via "Oprah's Bank Account," which included Drake and DaBaby. After issuing "Split/Whole Time" that May, he released Lil Boat 3, incorporating those prior singles and debuting at number 14 on the Billboard 200; a deluxe edition, Lil Boat 3.5, followed in November. Keeping momentum high, he put out his third mixtape in May 2021. Drawing from Michigan's underground scene, Yachty assembled Detroit and Flint rappers for Michigan Boy Boat, which cracked the U.S. Top 40. After the 2022 Diplo collaboration "Humble," he notched a modest solo hit with "Poland." His fifth studio album, Let's Start Here, landed in January 2023. Ahead of its arrival, Yachty described the project in interviews as leaning more toward psychedelic sounds and live instrumentation than standard rap fare. True to that rock orientation, the record topped Billboard's Top Modern Rock/Alternative Albums chart and reached number nine on the Billboard 200.
Yachty soon circled back to adventurous trap material, releasing non-album singles such as "TESLA" and the J. Cole collaboration "The Secret Recipe" from the matching EP before the close of 2023. He explored dance music with the 2024 track "stayinit," a joint effort with Fred again.. and Overmono. He next unveiled Concrete Boys, the crew featuring Camo!, Karrahbooo, Dc2trill, and Draft Day; their album It's Us, Vol. 1 settled in the upper half of the Billboard 200. Also during 2024, Yachty and James Blake issued the collaborative album Bad Cameo, whose tracks favored a gentler tone, spotlighting Blake's ambient layers and Yachty's melodic sing-rapping approach.
