42 Dugg, a Detroit rapper, discovered his path to music during a stretch of imprisonment marked by isolation. Locked in solitary confinement, he started composing rhymes to hold onto his mental stability, and after gaining freedom he resolved to make music his primary focus. A signing with Yo Gotti’s CMG label followed within a short span, allowing him to channel his unfiltered street perspective through projects such as the 2019 mixtape Young and Turnt and the 2021 set Free Dem Boyz. A 2022 partnership with CMG labelmate EST Gee produced Last Ones Left, while his appearance on the label’s Gangsta Art compilation and the one-time success of “U-Digg” alongside Lil Baby and Veeze added further momentum. The year 2024 brought his first proper studio album, 4eva Us Neva Them.

Raised on Detroit’s frequently hazardous East Side, 42 Dugg ran into legal troubles at an early age and received a six-year sentence at 15. Rapping began during his time behind bars, gaining seriousness only after his release with the January 2018 arrival of “Mama I’m Sorry.” Swift advancement came next through self-released efforts like the 11241 Wayburn mixtape, early collaborations with fellow Detroit artists Babyface Ray and the 42 Twinz, and growing interest from nationally known figures.

Initial singles such as “The Streets” prompted Yo Gotti to add 42 Dugg to Collective Music Group, with a concurrent arrangement securing a place on Lil Baby’s 4PF roster. Multiple tracks preceded the 2019 release of Young and Turnt, which carried guest appearances from Tee Grizzley, Blac Youngsta, and Peewee Longway. The 2020 follow-up Young & Turnt 2, built entirely from freestyles, entered the Billboard 200 at number 70.

Links with Marshmello on “Baggin’” and LBS Kee’vin on “Shining” came next, leading into the 2021 fourth mixtape Free Dem Boyz that featured Roddy Ricch on the charting “4 Da Gang.” April 2022 brought the joint Last Ones Left project with Kentucky rapper EST Gee and its standout track “Thump Shit.” Two months afterward, “U-Digg” with Lil Baby and Veeze registered across several charts and reached number 52 on the Billboard Hot 100. Heavy placement on the CMG compilation Gangsta Art, which climbed to number 11 on the Billboard 200 and spotlighted “Steppers,” expanded his exposure.

“Ron Artest,” a February 2023 collaboration with Babyface Ray, arrived before the rapper received a one-year prison term several months later for missing a reporting date connected to a prior 2022 sentence. Freed in October 2023, he returned to recording and issued his debut full-length album, 4eva Us Neva Them, in July 2024. Guest contributions came from Sexyy Red, Blac Youngsta, Lil Baby, Young Geezy, and EST Gee, the last of whom appeared on the single “Since When.”
