Rod Wave moves with ease between rough-edged delivery and tender melodies, establishing himself as a rapper and singer who rose rapidly from a regional hopeful to a platinum-certified force. His Ghetto Gospel project entered the Billboard 200's upper tier and closed out an active stretch of full-length releases that spanned 2018 and 2019. Pray 4 Love followed in 2020 and came within one spot of the summit, while SoulFly claimed the top position the next year behind several singles that reached the Top 40. His next two studio albums, Beautiful Mind in 2022 and Nostalgia in 2023, likewise led the chart, and Last Lap surfaced in 2024.

Born Rodarius Green, the artist first treated recording as a casual hobby enabled by his father, who supplied a microphone, and his brother, who provided a computer. Although he had no plans to pursue music professionally, early tracks shared by his producer gained traction in his hometown of St. Petersburg, Florida, and further material plus live performances secured a contract with Alamo Records, an imprint tied to Universal. While still in his teens, Rod issued several installments of his Hunger Games series along with a cluster of singles throughout 2018. Output increased the following year with the release of PTSD, which featured Bay Area legend E-40 as its sole guest, an appearance on E-40's "Made This Way" that marked his most prominent featured verse at the time, and the number-ten Billboard 200 placement of Ghetto Gospel. Kevin Gates, an early influence, served as executive producer on that debut studio album, which gained momentum from a Lil Durk-assisted remix of the single "Heart on Ice."

Rod delivered his second studio album, Pray 4 Love, in April 2020. It opened at number two on the Billboard 200 and yielded the pop-charting "Rags2Riches" featuring Lil Baby at number twelve. A deluxe edition appeared that August, shortly after the rapper survived a severe car accident. He channeled the incident into SoulFly, issued in March 2021, where the opening three singles all landed inside the Top 40 and propelled the project to number one on the Billboard 200. Later that year he released the standalone track "Forever Set in Stone." "By Your Side" and "Cold December" then reached the upper tier of the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart as the initial singles previewing his fourth album, Beautiful Mind, which arrived in August 2022 and became his second Billboard 200 number-one release.

Before the close of 2022 Rod issued the eight-song EP Jupiter's Diary: Seven Day Theory, which entered the Top Ten shortly after release. The non-album single "Fight the Feeling" followed in 2023 and peaked at number sixteen on the Billboard Hot 100. Nostalgia, his fifth album, arrived later that year and marked his third straight chart-topping set. Last Lap, dedicated to his late uncle, came out in 2024.
