NLE Choppa

NLE Choppa emerged as a Memphis rapper distinguished by his animated vocals and unrestrained, high-energy approach. Sudden prominence arrived in 2019 through the breakout single "Shotta Flow" and its accompanying video, paired with an engaging social media profile that drew widespread attention. While still 16, he attracted multiple seven-figure offers from major labels yet declined them to preserve ownership via an independent distribution arrangement. That stance later shifted when he signed with Warner Records, enabling the release of his 2020 debut studio album Top Shotta. The same year also brought the mixtape From Dark to Light, followed in 2022 by Me vs. Me, which connected his first full-length effort to the 2023 studio sequel Cottonwood 2. Certified arrived in 2024 as a compilation gathering every track that had earned gold, platinum, or multi-platinum status. Shortly afterward he dropped the short, sexually explicit mixtape Slut SZN, later expanded into PICASSO: SLUFFIN SZN X SLUT SZN.

Born Bryson Potts in 2002, he grew up in a challenging Memphis neighborhood and initially devoted himself to basketball before beginning to freestyle with peers at age 14. One year later he entered the studio to record raps shaped by Southern artists such as NBA Youngboy, Meek Mill, and Lil Wayne. Early output appeared under the name YNR Choppa before he adopted NLE Choppa to represent his No Love Entertainment brand. Clips posted online with fellow teenage rappers gained regional notice until the January 2019 track "Shotta Flow" achieved global traction through its lively, boisterous video that amassed tens of millions of views within months.

Major-label overtures followed, yet he again retained full ownership of his catalog while issuing a steady stream of 2019 singles including "I Don't Need No Help," "Shotta Flow 2," "Shotta Flow 3," and "Camelot." Those tracks led to the November release of his debut EP Cottonwood. After finalizing the Warner deal, NLE Choppa issued Top Shotta in August 2020, featuring appearances by Mulatto, Lil Baby, Roddy Ricch, and Chief Keef and securing immediate Billboard chart placement. From Dark to Light appeared months later, mixing earlier recordings with newer material centered on spirituality and enlightenment rather than prior themes of violence and hardship; the project included contributions from Big Sean and Ink and debuted at number 115 on the Billboard 200.

Subsequent singles arrived in 2021 with Jhonni Blaze on "Toxic" and Polo G on "Jumpin'," followed in early 2022 by the Moneybagg Yo collaboration "Too Hot." Both latter tracks appeared on the mixtape Me vs. Me, which climbed to number 14 on the charts. A series of advance singles for the sophomore album Cottonwood 2 began in April 2022, among them "In the U.K.," "Champions," and the Lil Wayne-assisted "Ain't Gonna Answer," sustaining momentum across nearly twelve months. The LP surfaced in April 2023 with cover imagery depicting the rapper atop his car amid his Memphis neighborhood, encircled by plaques representing his gold and platinum certifications; it reached number 21 on the Billboard 200 and number 9 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

Further standalone releases such as "College Girls" and "C'mon Freestyle" maintained visibility, while 2024 brought additional projects outside the album cycle: the joint mixtape The Chosen Ones with DJ Booker, the Shotta Flow Series anthology, and the Certified compilation of all previously certified hits. September saw the arrival of Slut SZN, a collection of sexually charged tracks extending the style of the 2022 single "Slut Me Out," whose eight songs were later incorporated into the more R&B-oriented PICASSO: SLUFFIN SZN X SLUT SZN released just before Christmas.
