Biography
Emerging from his early street singles and unpolished mixtapes, D.C. rapper Shy Glizzy developed toward more polished releases across subsequent years. He first drew listeners in with the catchy, youthful bravado of 2014's "Awwsome," which paved the way for chart success and international recognition through projects such as the atmospherically trappy 2018 album Fully Loaded alongside a steady stream of mixtapes that encompassed 2020's Young Jefe 3 and 2021's Don't Feed the Sharks.
Born Marquis Amonte King in 1992, the future rapper spent his formative years in the greater Washington, D.C. region. His father passed away during King's infancy, and the teenager soon became entangled in minor street offenses, serving time on robbery charges at age 16. Upon release from juvenile detention, King turned to rapping and dropped his debut mixtape, No Brainer, in early 2011, followed later that year by Streets Hottest Youngin. After engaging in high-profile disputes with established artists—most notably by targeting Fat Trel through the diss track "Disrespect the Tech," a response to Trel's "Respect with the Tech"—he issued further 2012 mixtapes Law and Fxck Rap while assembling his own Glizzy Gang, an A$AP Mob-styled collective of similarly named rappers that included Snipe Glizzy and Ant Glizzy. Law 2 arrived in 2013, boasting guest spots from Migos, Yo Gotti, Kevin Gates, and producer Metro Boomin. The following year Shy Glizzy released the Young Jefe mixtape, whose slurring and infectious standout "Awwsome" became his first major hit and foreshadowed an eventual stage-name shift; a subsequent remix featuring 2 Chainz and A$AP Rocky climbed into the Top 50 of the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
After three more mixtapes, Glizzy adopted the moniker Jefe at the end of 2016 for the EP The World Is Yours. He reverted to Shy Glizzy in 2017 for the album Quiet Storm, which included beats from Zaytoven plus appearances by Trey Songz, A Boogie wit da Hoodie, and additional guests. A series of 2018 singles, among them the Gunna and Tory Lanez collaboration "Do You Understand?," preceded the full-length Fully Loaded; technically his debut proper studio album following years of mixtapes, it entered the Billboard Top 50. In spring 2019 he returned with Covered N Blood, an album that featured NBA YoungBoy and 3Glizzy. After opening 2020 with the singles "Lonely Vibes" and "Right or Wrong," the rapper delivered his 14th mixtape, Young Jefe 3, in September, showcasing Lil Uzi Vert, Meek Mill, and Ty Dolla $ign. Don't Feed the Sharks, another mixtape spotlighting Glizzy alongside his Glizzy Gang collective, surfaced in 2021. A run of strong 2022 singles followed, highlighted by "Slime-U-Out (feat. 21 Savage)" and "Borderline (feat. EST Gee)."
