Biography
Craig David first drew global notice through his polished, garage-infused R&B when the single “Fill Me In” and the debut album Born to Do It both topped the U.K. charts in summer 2000. Just nineteen at the time, the Southampton native became one of the youngest British male solo artists to reach that double summit. He also secured mainstream U.S. traction, peaking at number eleven on the Billboard 200 while earning platinum certification in eighteen other territories. Britain remained a stronghold, where he accumulated twenty Top 40 singles and returned to the Top 20 with Slicker Than Your Average in 2002, The Story Goes… in 2005, and Trust Me in 2007. After the 2010 Motown tribute Signed Sealed Delivered, he reclaimed the U.K. album summit with Following My Intuition in 2016, then reached number two with The Time Is Now in 2018 before landing another Top 40 entry, “Who Are You” featuring MNEK, from his eighth album, 22, released in 2022.
Before that breakthrough, the Southampton-born singer had worked as a local radio presenter and later spun records in clubs, where he met several rising English producers. One key connection was Artful Dodger’s Mark Hill, yet David’s earliest notable credit arrived when he won a songwriting contest staged by the group Damage; they recorded his submission “I’m Ready” and placed it as the B-side to their 1997 single “Wonderful Tonight.” Two years later, Artful Dodger produced and co-wrote the languid but rhythmically intricate “Rewind,” on which David sang lead; issued as Artful Dodger Presents Craig David, the track climbed to number two on the U.K. pop chart.
His first official solo release, “Fill Me In,” arrived in April 2000. Written with Hill, the song hit number one and drove sales of Born to Do It, which followed four months later. A subsequent U.S. agreement with Atlantic helped push worldwide shipments past three million and introduced a refined version of U.K. garage to international audiences. Missy Elliott, Beyoncé, and Usher publicly declared themselves admirers, and David collected three MOBO awards that year, even though he was overlooked in all six Brit Award categories for which he had been nominated. In 2001 he earned another MOBO for Best U.K. Act and received three Ivor Novello trophies, further acknowledging his songwriting peak.
November 2002 brought the somewhat rougher second album Slicker Than Your Average, whose opening four singles all entered the U.K. Top Ten; the set also achieved gold status stateside. Nearly three years elapsed before The Story Goes…, a Warner collection of restrained, adult-oriented contemporary R&B highlighted by the Top Five U.K. single “All the Way,” though the album itself remained unavailable in the United States. Trust Me appeared in 2007 with a bolder, more energetic tone, led by the Top Ten, David Bowie-sampling “Hot Stuff (Let’s Dance)” and the Kano duet “This Is the Girl.” The following year a Greatest Hits package and an honorary doctorate from Southampton Solent University underscored his accomplishments to date.
Citing Motown’s influence, David issued the covers album Signed, Sealed, Delivered in 2010. After extensive international touring and several charitable projects, he resumed studio work, releasing collaborations with Erick Morillo of Subliminal Records and the house duo Stereo Palma. In 2013 he joined the judging panel and performed on the South African Idol television program. By then he had begun hosting private events at his Miami residence, which evolved into a weekly DJ residency on Capital Xtra. That period also included a worldwide tour and recording sessions for what would become his sixth studio album. Its first singles surfaced in late 2015 and early 2016: “When the Bassline Drops,” featuring Big Narstie, reached number ten in the U.K., while Blonde-produced “Nothing Like This” entered the Top 20. Around the same time David appeared on Katy B’s “Who Am I” and Kaytranada’s “Got It Good.”
Following My Intuition arrived in September 2016 and topped the U.K. albums chart. Almost exactly a year later he previewed his seventh album with “Heartline,” quickly followed by the Bastille collaboration “I Know You,” his thirteenth Top Ten U.K. hit as lead artist. The full-length The Time Is Now, featuring contributions from Blonde, Fraser T. Smith, and Kaytranada among others, landed in January 2018 and peaked at number two. After the 2019 non-album single “When You Know What Love Is,” David returned to the Top 40 with “Who You Are” featuring MNEK, the lead track from his eighth album, 22, issued in 2022; additional guests included Galantis, Nippa, and Wretch 32.
