In 2000 the vocal collective Mis-Teeq stormed onto the British music landscape via their inaugural release, “Why?”. Originally conceived as a straightforward R&B recording, the track received a transformative garage remix from specialist Matt “Jam” Lamont that ignited the underground scene and secured extensive radio play. With that breakthrough Mis-Teeq carved out a signature sound fusing R&B, garage, and rap, a hybrid they themselves branded “U.K. Urban.”

Alesha and Sabrina first crossed paths at a South West London dance academy, where they had already begun performing as a duo. They encountered Su-Elise during her audition for an unrelated project; the three women later signed with the same production outfit and, after bonding, elected to form a group by adding Zena as its fourth member. Zena was subsequently removed from the lineup in the interest of “harmony and balance.”

Despite surfacing on multiple dance compilations and receiving scant early press attention, “Why” still registered as a hit. The follow-ups “All I Want” and “One Night Stand” extended the group’s reach internationally. Mis-Teeq’s recordings remained unavailable in America until 2004, when a self-titled collection that distilled the strongest tracks from both U.K. albums finally rectified the omission.
