Emerging from rejection on the 2001 ITV competition Popstars, the five-piece R&B-infused pop act Liberty X defied expectations by eclipsing the show's victorious group, Hear'Say. The lineup of Tony Lundon, Kelli Young, Kevin Simm, Michelle Heaton, and Jessica Taylor secured a deal with Richard Branson's V2 label mere weeks after the Popstars panel dismissed them. While Hear'Say faded from view slightly less than 18 months afterward, Liberty X sustained momentum through an unbroken run of hit singles. Their first release, the September 2001 single "Thinking It Over," appeared under the name Liberty. A High Court dispute with a U.S. R&B outfit sharing that title compelled the addition of an X, after which the group briefly ranked among Britain's leading pop acts.

May 2002 brought a U.K. number-one hit with "Just a Little," later honored as Best British Single at the 2003 Brit Awards. Subsequent releases "Got to Have Your Love," a reinterpretation of the Mantronix original, and "Holding on for You" both appeared on the multi-platinum debut album Thinking It Over. Partnership with Richard X yielded "Being Nobody," yet two further singles drawn from the 2003 follow-up Being Somebody registered only modest commercial returns. An 18-month break ended in September 2005 with the final album X, whose sales continued to decline even though it contained the charting tracks "Song for Lovers" and the Children in Need double A-side "A Night to Remember"/"Everybody Dance." By May 2007 the members declared they would cease recording as a unit. Heaton and Taylor maintained visibility through their respective marriages to former pop hopeful Andy Scott-Lee and cricketer Kevin Pietersen, while reports linked both Young and Simm to possible solo endeavors.
