Biography
Kym Marsh’s career stands out as the most turbulent among any reality pop star to emerge from British television during the noughties. Born in 1976 in Garswood, Lancashire, to a mother who had immigrated from Lebanon and an English father, she started singing in public while still a child. At ten she performed with a band at her local Labour club, and by thirteen she had issued her debut single, “One Kiss,” on the independent label Jelly Street Records. After training at the Elliot Clark stage school in Liverpool, she contributed vocals to dance projects such as Solar Stone and 2dB.
In 2000 Marsh auditioned for ITV’s Popstars, a pioneering contest that brought the normally private selection process to the screen. Her profile rose sharply after public disagreements with judge Nigel Lythgoe concerning her weight and the disclosure that she already had two children. Selected among the final five, she joined bandmates in Hear’Say for shared accommodation and recording sessions. Their opening release, “Pure and Simple,” set a record as the fastest-selling debut single in British chart history; the follow-up “The Way to Your Love” and the album Popstars both topped the charts, after which the group completed a 37-date arena tour. Shortly after the appearance of their second album, Everybody, Marsh departed amid reported conflicts with Myleene Klass.
She then secured a solo contract with Island Records and scored early hits with a more reflective acoustic-pop approach. “Cry” reached number two and “Come on Over” number ten, yet “Sentimental” stalled at number 35 and the album Standing Tall peaked at number nine before exiting the chart after three weeks. Turning back to acting, she portrayed Annette in the West End production of Saturday Night Fever and took roles in Holby City, Hollyoaks in the City, and Doctors. During 2006 she placed fourth in the BBC contest Making Your Mind Up with the song “Whisper to Me,” the national selection for Eurovision. That same year she made a short debut as Michelle Connor in Coronation Street; viewer response prompted the producers to retain the character, and she soon ranked among the country’s most recognized soap performers. In 2007 Marsh received the Most Popular Newcomer award at the National Television Awards.
