Biography
Karsh Kale, the percussionist and songwriter whose name is pronounced Kursh Kah-lay, earns his primary recognition through his command of the tabla, the paired hand drums of northern India, together with his electronic percussion abilities. Born to Indian parents and raised in the U.S., he absorbed influences from both Eastern and Western music, which led him to craft a distinctive hybrid blending electronic dance with Indian folk. His first appearance on record occurred with Tabla Beat Science on the 2000 album Tala Matrix, while his own debut album Realize arrived in July 2001. That release showcased contributions from distinguished Indian classical musicians such as sarangi player Sultan Khan, bansuri performers Ajay Prasanna and Steve Gorn, and Ethiopian pop vocalist Gigi. Several weeks ahead of the album’s launch, its opening single “Distance” surfaced with four remixes, one created by Kale himself and the others by Banco de Gaia plus the India-based Asian Massive producers Midival Punditz and Capt. Groove. In 2002 Kale issued Redesign, which presented reworkings of tracks from Realize by Bill Laswell and DJ Spooky.
