The moniker Bombay Dub Orchestra applies to the electro-Indian ambient chill-out creations of British composers and producers Garry Hughes and Andrew T. Mackay, in collaboration with mixing engineer Damon Sood, despite the group's name suggesting origins in Bombay or affiliations with dub music and orchestral ensembles. Electro beats combine with Indian instrumentation and layers of sweetly flowing string orchestration in their well-crafted chill-out melodies, evoking classical Bollywood film scores filtered through a Jamaican lens—a brighter take on nocturnal, drifting ambient soundscapes. Their debut self-titled album came out in 2006 via Six Degrees Records. Two years afterward, in 2008, Six Degrees issued the follow-up 3 Cities, which incorporated contributions from approximately 75 musicians. The fall of 2013 saw the release of Tales from the Grand Bazaar, an album tracked across Kingston, Jamaica, London, Bombay, Istanbul, L.A., and New York, and including performances by Sly & Robbie along with Asad Khan and Soumik Datta.
