Biography
Forming initially in Swansea as a remix collective, Hybrid brought together Mike Truman, Chris Healings, and Lee Mullin. Their paths crossed during nights out at local clubs in the early ’90s, after which they began creating their own reworkings of tracks and eventually secured official commissions from record labels. Distinct’ive Records then signed the trio, leading them to Moscow to record their debut album, Wide Angle, with vocalist Julee Cruise and the 90-piece Russian Federal Orchestra. “Finished Symphony,” featuring the orchestra, entered the U.K. singles chart in July 1999; “If I Survive,” which spotlighted Cruise, followed in September, as did Wide Angle itself. Kinetic licensed the album for the United States, where it appeared in reconfigured form through Reprise, a Warner Records imprint, in September 2000. That autumn the group opened several dates on Moby’s American tour. Over the ensuing three years they issued two installments of the Remix and Additional Production By compilation series along with the mix album Y4K. Their next studio effort, Morning Sci-Fi, arrived in 2003. I Choose Noise, released in 2006, featured guest appearances from Perry Farrell and Peter Hook; the album was promoted with a U.S. tour the following year. Disappear Here, issued in 2010, marked the official addition of songwriter and vocalist Charlotte James to the lineup.
