British trance musician and remixer Nick Bracegirdle records under the project name Chicane, first gaining notice in 1995 when he issued the U.K. Top 40 single "Right Here Right Now" as Disco Citizens. Switching to the Chicane alias, he entered the British Top 20 with "Offshore" near the close of 1996. Maire Brennan of Clannad joined him for a version of the Clannad song "The Theme from Harry's Game" retitled "Saltwater," which climbed into the U.K. Top Ten and spread internationally. Far from the Maddening Crowds, the initial Chicane album, arrived in 1997. Bracegirdle’s remix of Bryan Adams’ "Cloud #9" soon produced another substantial success across most Western markets. Using Adams as an uncredited singer, he next reached the top of the British charts with "Don't Give Up." The track formed part of the second Chicane album, Behind the Sun, issued throughout Europe in spring 2000; it secured a British Top Ten placing and appeared on charts in Europe as well as the Far East. Behind the Sun reached the United States in August 2000, followed the next summer by Visions of Ibiza. Bracegirdle encountered multiple difficulties in the ensuing period, which led him to put out the 2007 album Somersault on his own. He issued the next seven albums on his independent Modena label, the last being 2021’s Everything We Had to Leave Behind.
