Biography
Unlike their Bristol peers in the electronica realm during the 1990s, Way Out West steered clear of trip-hop and jungle influences, opting instead for direct house and trance sounds more aligned with progressive British dance scenes than American hip-hop traditions. Jody Wisternoff and Nick Warren formed the duo in the mid-'90s. Already an experienced producer, Wisternoff had begun recording at age 14 alongside fellow Bristolian house artists Smith & Mighty, whereas Warren operated as a prominent Balearic DJ and club promoter shaped by Madchester aesthetics. Their initial joint sessions yielded the 1996 single "The Gift," which gained traction across dancefloors and airwaves after featuring in a British advertisement. Deconstruction then issued the duo's self-titled debut album in 1997. A subsequent move to Distinct'ive led to Intensify in 2001, followed three years later by the similarly oriented Don't Look Now.
While Warren issued numerous mix compilations, many through Global Underground, Way Out West resurfaced in 2009 with We Love Machine. Contributors including Scuba, Jaytech, and D. Ramirez appeared on the follow-up We Love Machine: The Remixes, released via Hope Recordings in 2010. Wisternoff issued his solo effort Trails We Blaze on Anjunadeep in 2012 and handled mixes for several volumes in the label's compilation series. Anjunadeep also put out the Way Out West singles "Tuesday Maybe" and "Set My Mind" during 2016. The duo's fifth album, Tuesday Maybe, emerged in June 2017 with guest spots from Doe Paoro and Liu Bei, coinciding with a Glastonbury Festival appearance.
