Biography
Throughout the 1990s Dan and John Kahuna stood out as a major act whose fusion of the former’s turntable expertise and the latter’s commercial acumen delivered the defining energy of big beat. Alongside the Chemical Brothers they shaped the genre’s core identity, attracting ardent followers that included London club regular Fatboy Slim. Echoing the Sex Pistols’ abrupt exit, the brothers severed their own momentum just as mainstream success loomed. At that stage they had released no complete album, leaving observers to lament the unfulfilled promise. Abandoning the indulgent club lifestyle sustained by their ownership of Big Kahuna Burger, they resumed activity through remix work and a Charlatans UK tour. Enlisting additional players and merging their separate influences, the pair—now operating as FC Kahuna—issued their first album, Machine Says Yes, in 2002.
