Biography
Braxton Cook ranks among elite alto saxophonists, vocalists, and composers. His singular 21st-century method fuses contemporary and post-bop jazz with soul, funk, rap, and gospel. Whether directing his own ensemble or performing inside Christian Scott aTunde Adjua's group, these idioms regularly intersect inside single works.
Following the independent release of Sketch in 2014, Cook developed into a sought-after session musician whose credits include Mac Miller, Middle Clash, Lion Babe, Lauren Desberg, and Scott. As a stage and touring musician he has shared bills with the Christian McBride Big Band, Marquis Hill, Solange Knowles, and Rhianna. Vocal work first surfaced on Somewhere in Between in 2017. Nettwerk later reissued Fire Sign in 2022 and issued Who Are You When No One Is Watching? in 2023.
A Washington, D.C. native, Cook began saxophone studies at age five under his father's guidance while household recordings nurtured his ear and technique. High-school years brought local gigs and sit-ins. Although enrolled as an English major at Georgetown University, he chose a professional music path and transferred to Juilliard. During studies there he attended a Donald Harrison concert, met the saxophonist's nephew—trumpeter and composer Christian Scott—and began an extended collaboration that has encompassed studio dates, recordings, and sustained touring.
As a bandleader Cook opened with the self-released EP Sketch in 2014 and the album Braxton Cook Meets Butcher Brown in 2015, both of which drew favorable attention from leading American jazz critics and U.K. selectors such as Gilles Peterson. Fresh Selects signed him in 2016; the label debut Somewhere in Between appeared in 2017, followed by Somewhere in Between: Remixes & Outtakes, on which he introduced his voice across several tracks and incorporated production approaches drawn from R&B, hip-hop, and dance music. The Fader described him as a "Jazz Prodigy" in its review of the original album, which surpassed one million digital streams and downloads.
No Doubt, his second full-length, arrived in 2018 and reached number one on Jazz Albums streaming charts, logging more than a million streams in its first month and later exceeding one million complete-album streams. The recording secured festival engagements at Tourcoing Jazz Festival, So What’s Next Jazz Festival, and Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London. While the album remained a subject of discussion among jazz listeners in 2019, Cook performed at North Sea Jazz Festival and Montreux Jazz Festival. Fire Sign was released digitally on his 29th birthday in March 2020; leading a quintet, the set balanced contemporary jazz, electronica, and polished urban soul.
Nettwerk signed Cook in March 2022. The Black Mona Lisa EP included guest trumpeter Marquis Hill on the single and video for "The Same." In September he appeared on Kiefer's Stones Throw single "U Already Know" b/w "Keep Moving." The following day Nettwerk reissued Fire Sign on LP and CD while Cook continued studio work. February 2023 brought the 17-track Who Are You When No One Is Watching?, an hour-long collection featuring Masego on "90s" and Orlando Watson on "The Answer."
