Biography
Nate Smith sings and writes country songs with a rich, warm vocal tone and a knack for capturing the ups and downs of ordinary existence. He reached success in Nashville only on his second attempt, prompted by a stark reminder of his attachment to his origins. His songs carry strong feeling yet maintain an understated, relaxed delivery that suits the power of his voice, while projecting a sincerity that aligns with the direct messages in his words. His breakthrough arrived when the intimate track “One of These Days” spread widely online, after which independent releases such as “Sleeve” and “Under My Skin” brought a deal with Sony Music and further attention via the gentle reflection on lasting romance, “I Don’t Wanna Go to Heaven.” In 2023 he issued his first full-length project, the self-titled Nate Smith, driven by the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot Country Songs entry “Whiskey on You.” That album entered the Top 30 of the Billboard 200 and was followed by the EP Through the Smoke. In 2024 he returned with his second studio album, California Gold, fronted by the single “Bulletproof.”
Born in Paradise, California, among the Sierra Nevada foothills, Smith absorbed an eclectic range of music during his youth that included mainstream country figures such as Garth Brooks, heartland rock performers like Bob Seger, the pop-oriented R&B of Michael Jackson, and the raw alternative rock of Nirvana. He began playing guitar at age 13 and found his earliest performing outlet at a local church, serving as worship leader and appearing regularly in Sunday services. At 23 he moved from California to Nashville, Tennessee, where his abilities secured a recording agreement with the Christian label Word Records. The opportunities there failed to develop as hoped, so after several years he went back to Paradise to rejoin family and accepted a hospital position.
During November 2018, while Smith was on the job, a massive wildfire tore through the community, leveling his residence and ranking among California’s most destructive natural disasters. His guitar was destroyed in the fire, yet when a music-industry acquaintance supplied a replacement instrument, he felt moved to compose a piece about the fire’s aftermath alongside his collaborator Miykael Goodwin. The resulting tribute to endurance and local loyalty, “One of These Days,” gained traction on social platforms after Smith performed it during a local news broadcast; the surge of support, together with a favorable response to his appearance at a charity concert alongside Pitbull and X Ambassadors, persuaded him to attempt a Nashville career once more. In 2020 he put out the independent four-track EP Reckless, whose title song gained notice on streaming platforms. Later that year “Under My Skin” connected with listeners, and in 2021 he repeated the achievement with “Sleeve.”
His growing profile drew attention from major labels, leading to a mid-2021 signing with Sony Music Nashville. Before the year ended he issued two fresh singles for the imprint, “Raised Up” and “I Don’t Wanna Go to Heaven,” the latter quickly becoming another streaming favorite. Additional tracks arrived in 2022, among them “Whiskey on You,” which reached number 44 on the Billboard Hot 100, and “Wreckage.” These releases cleared the path for his debut full-length, the self-titled Nate Smith, which appeared in February 2023. Smith shared production duties with Lindsay Rimes, Joël Bruyère, and Jared Hampton. The album climbed to number six on the Top Country Albums chart and number 30 on the Billboard 200. Early 2024 brought the EP Through the Smoke, introduced by the single “Bulletproof.” That song also served as the lead track for Smith’s second studio album, California Gold, released later in 2024.
