Carly Pearce crafts songs with raw emotional clarity that blend pop sensibilities and country roots. Already an experienced stage performer, she broke through commercially via her 2017 debut album Every Little Thing, whose platinum-certified title track anchored the project. Her grounded approach cut through the glossy production, drawing in both pop-country audiences and traditional fans. By the arrival of the introspective, redemptive 29: Written in Stone in 2021 she had already secured two Top Ten country albums. The record drew sonic cues from 1990s country figures such as Patty Loveless and Lee Ann Womack; that influence helped power the Ashley McBryde duet “Never Wanted to Be That Girl,” which reached the top of the Billboard Country Airplay chart in 2022 and delivered Pearce her first Grammy. Building on that momentum, she explored her country heritage more deeply on the 2024 album Hummingbird, which was introduced by the Chris Stapleton collaboration “We Don’t Fight Anymore.”

Born in Taylor Mill, Kentucky, on April 24, 1990, Pearce started performing early and joined a bluegrass band’s touring lineup at age eleven. At sixteen she left school behind and headed to Tennessee, where she logged six shows a day, five days a week, as a regular act at the Dollywood theme park. She also contributed vocals to several budget-label bluegrass compilations, among them an acoustic Christmas collection. At nineteen she decided to concentrate on original material and moved to Nashville, quickly establishing herself as a songwriter. In 2012 she obtained artist-development and publishing agreements with Sony; although the arrangement dissolved, the experience sharpened her professional focus even while she supported herself through various odd jobs.

Her fortunes shifted in 2016. After recording the independent duet “Wasn’t That Drunk” with Josh Abbott, the track climbed to number 36 on the Country Airplay chart. During that same period she began collaborating with producer Busbee. Their song “Every Little Thing” gained traction on satellite radio late in the year and connected strongly with listeners. Big Machine Records responded by signing her and re-releasing the track in early 2017. That October she issued her Busbee-produced debut album, Every Little Thing, which peaked at number four on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart. The standalone single “Closer to You” followed in 2018, then in October 2019 came the Lee Brice duet “I Hope You’re Happy Now,” a Top Five country hit. Her second album, Carly Pearce, became the final project Busbee completed before his death in late 2019; Big Machine released it in February 2020, where it reached number six on the Top Country Albums chart.

Guided by a 1990s country instrumental palette, Pearce worked with producers Shane McAnally, Josh Osborne, and Jimmy Robbins on the divorce-themed 29 EP. Issued by Big Machine in February 2021, it arrived with lead single “Next Girl.” That September she expanded the project into the full-length 29: Written in Stone, incorporating the seven EP tracks plus eight new songs including “Dear Miss Loretta.” The album secured her third consecutive Top Ten placement on the Country chart. “Never Wanted to Be That Girl,” the Ashley McBryde duet from the album, ascended to number one on Billboard Country Airplay in May 2022 and later earned the pair the 2023 Grammy for Best Country Duo/Group Performance. Later in the year “What He Didn’t Do” rose to number seven on the same chart. After issuing the concert recording 29: Written in Stone (Live from Music City) in March 2023, Pearce previewed her next album late that year with the Chris Stapleton duet “We Don’t Fight Anymore.” The track appeared on Hummingbird, the 2024 release in which she further mined her country foundations.
