Hannah Ellis first drew widespread notice in 2016 with "Officer Down," a tribute to her murdered cousin. Her path reflected many currents running through popular music during the 2010s, beginning with a country single before she joined the 2015 cast of The Voice. After issuing her self-titled debut EP on Curb in 2017, she leaned further into contemporary pop through a string of duets that incorporated electronic, R&B, and rock textures, even as she reaffirmed her country foundation on 2022's "Country Can" and 2023's "Wine Country." Her first full-length project, That Girl, arrived in January 2024.

Born in Campbellsville, Kentucky, Ellis developed a passion for music early on. After earning her degree from the University of Kentucky in 2012, she relocated to Nashville. Her stint on season eight of The Voice ended quickly, yet she secured a publishing agreement with Word Music/Wordcountry in December 2015. The 2016 release of "Officer Down" generated press coverage that carried into the next year. In 2017 she put out two singles, "You Were Never Gone"—which appeared on the Teen Wolf soundtrack—and "Temporary Feeling," followed by her self-titled EP in October.

During 2018 she offered "The Middle (acoustic)" and "Mary, Did You Know?" Three solo tracks arrived in 2019—"Your Woman," "Friends Like These," and "Never in Love (acoustic)"—alongside the duet "If the World Was Ending" with Nick Wayne. Late in 2020 she joined Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano on "What If" and recorded "Together" with Jackson Michelson for for KING & COUNTRY. In 2021 she released the solo singles "Home and a Hometown" and "Us," plus the Stars Go Dim collaboration "Home." An acoustic take of "Us" led into the August 2022 launch of "Country Can," which peaked at number 55 on Country Airplay. More singles surfaced in 2023, among them "Wine Country" and "Someone Else's Heartbreak," before That Girl appeared the following January.
