Brandy Clark built an impressive catalog of songwriting successes early on, among them Miranda Lambert's "Mama's Broken Heart," the Band Perry's chart-topping "Better Dig Two," and Kacey Musgraves' "Follow Your Arrow." When paired with her own recordings, these achievements established her as a commanding presence in contemporary country music, grounded in traditional forms yet sharply attuned to current realities through stories that feel both fresh and enduring. Her first solo effort, the 2013 album 12 Stories, earned widespread praise as one of the year's standout country releases, prompting her move to Warner Bros. for the 2016 project Big Day in a Small Town. Once on the major label, Clark pursued broader sonic possibilities: she collaborated with the Memphis Strings and Horns on 2020's Your Life Is a Record before teaming with producer Brandi Carlile on a self-titled album in 2023.

Born in Morton, Washington, Clark picked up the guitar at nine and began experimenting with songwriting. High school brought a focus on sports that secured her a basketball scholarship to Central Washington University, though she ultimately left athletics behind and returned home to attend community college. There she rekindled her musical interests, joining local bands on guitar and vocals. In 1998 she relocated to Nashville and enrolled in the music business program at Belmont University while deepening her commitment to songwriting.

Following graduation, Clark took a position at Leadership Music and kept performing and composing, frequently alongside her songwriting partner Shane McAnally. Her material first appeared on other artists' albums in 2009, with a key breakthrough arriving the next year when Reba McEntire cut "Cry" and "The Day She Got Divorced" for All the Women I Am. Additional placements followed in 2011, including tracks for Ashton Shepherd ("Tryin' to Go to Church"), LeAnn Rimes ("Crazy Women"), and Miranda Lambert, whose "Mama's Broken Heart" reached number two in 2013. Around the time that single ascended the charts, Clark began establishing herself as a performer, opening for Sheryl Crow in 2012 and making her Grand Ole Opry debut in December of that year—the same month she issued a three-track EP on her own. The self-titled EP circulated through critical circles by word of mouth, generating anticipation for the full-length 12 Stories, which arrived in fall 2013. Produced by Dave Brainard and led by the single "Stripes," the album received strong reviews upon its October release.

Although 12 Stories did not dominate the charts, peaking at number 23 on Billboard's country tally without a hit single, it earned Clark a Warner contract. While preparing her major-label debut she continued placing songs, contributing to 2014 albums by Miranda Lambert, Toby Keith, and Reba McEntire as well as Kacey Musgraves' 2015 release Pageant Material. Her Warner debut, Big Day in a Small Town, appeared in summer 2016 under producer Jay Joyce and achieved only modest country-radio success, with "Girl Next Door" reaching the Top 40 on Country Airplay. After a period of reflection, Clark reunited with Joyce for 2020's Your Life Is a Record, which featured the Memphis Strings and Horns plus a duet with Randy Newman on "Bigger Boat."

Shucked, the musical comedy with songs co-written by Clark and Shane McAnally, opened at Salt Lake City's Pioneer Memorial Theatre in October 2022. The show reached Broadway on March 8, 2023, just weeks before Clark issued her self-titled album, again produced by Brandi Carlile. The record included appearances by Derek Trucks, Lucius, and Carlile herself, returning to the direct, unvarnished approach of 12 Stories.
