Biography
Lee Brice presented a more understated presence in the early 2010s, when mainstream country largely featured muscular performers delivering exuberant celebration tracks. Drawing from modern rock and the country era shaped by Garth Brooks, he leaned into meticulous songcraft rather than bold showmanship. Though he enjoyed lively moments, as shown by his 2013 country success "Parking Lot Party," Brice focused on emotionally direct ballads such as "A Woman Like You," "Hard to Love," "I Drive Your Truck," and "I Don't Dance," Top Ten country singles that highlighted his flexible, seasoned vocal style and precise compositional approach. Songwriting first earned him recognition in Nashville, where he contributed material to Jason Aldean, Tim McGraw, and his idol Brooks, yet his own performances propelled him to stardom during the early 2010s. That foundation sustained his position atop the Country Airplay charts into the 2020s, yielding number one hits including "Rumor," "One of Them Girls," and the Carly Pearce duet "I Hope You're Happy Now." He further teamed with Nate Smith and Hailey Whitters on 2024's "Drinkin' Buddies."
Born in Sumter, South Carolina, Brice developed his singing through church services and took up piano at age seven. Guitar followed, and by ten he was composing original material, shaped in part by his father's preferred acts, the Oak Ridge Boys and Alabama. During high school he caught the performing bug, claiming the school's talent contest three consecutive years while broadening his listening to include rock & roll, though Garth Brooks remained his central influence. Football also occupied his time, securing him a scholarship to Clemson University, yet an arm injury prompted a full commitment to music.
Following guidance from Doug Johnson, Brice relocated to Nashville, where Johnson later secured him a publishing deal upon becoming an A&R executive at Curb Records. Brice began landing cuts with established artists, starting with a 2006 track for the rock band Sister Hazel that led to Jason Aldean's recording of "Not Every Man Lives" on the 2007 album Relentless and Garth Brooks' inclusion of "More Than a Memory" as a bonus track on 2007's The Ultimate Hits.
Behind the scenes his fortunes improved, but fronting his own recordings proved slower. He signed with Curb as an artist in 2007 and completed the album Picture of Me, though the singles "She Ain't Right," "Happy Endings," and "Upper Middle Class White Trash" generated little chart impact. He devoted 2008 to professional songwriting while refining his personal material, resurfacing in 2009 with "Love Like Crazy." The single finally connected, lingering on the charts for more than a year and climbing to number three on the Billboard country chart en route to platinum certification. The June 2010 album Love Like Crazy did not dominate commercially, yet the hit single established the groundwork for sustained success.
Brice reappeared in late 2011 with "A Woman Like You," the lead single from 2012's Hard 2 Love. That track became his first number one and drove the album to gold status through the Top Ten country singles "Hard to Love" and "I Drive Your Truck," plus the gold-certified "Parking Lot Party," which reached number 11. Building on this momentum, he delivered his third album, the self-produced I Don't Dance, in 2014. The title track arrived first, achieving Top Ten country placement during summer 2014 and building anticipation for the September release. I Don't Dance opened at number one on the Billboard country chart and number five on the Top 200. "Drinking Class" and "That Don't Sound Like You" continued charting into 2015; that summer Brice issued the EP Mixtape: 'Til Summer's Gone. He focused on new material throughout 2016, surfacing in mid-2017 with "Boy," the initial single from his self-titled album that appeared in November. "Boy" peaked at number 16 on Billboard's Country Airplay, a mark surpassed by the gradual climb of "Rumor." The soulful number attained number one on Country Airplay and earned RIAA platinum certification.
Brice opened 2020 by pairing with Carly Pearce on "I Hope You're Happy Now," a single drawn from her self-titled album. After it topped Billboard's Country Airplay, Brice secured his own number one with "One of Them Girls," the lead single from his fifth album, Hey World, released in November 2020. The following year the project produced additional charting singles in "Memory I Don't Mess With" and "Soul." In 2024 he returned to the Top 30 of the Country Airplay chart with "Drinkin' Buddies," featuring Nate Smith and Hailey Whitters.
