Chris Janson projected a relaxed confidence paired with sharp wit, establishing his place between the rowdy bro-country wave of the 2010s and the muscular country-rock sound of Eric Church. He built his foundation as a staff songwriter, supplying Tim McGraw with "Truck Yeah" and Justin Moore with "Off the Beaten Path," before stepping forward with the spare, humorous "Buy Me a Boat" that delivered his first breakthrough in 2015. Subsequent work such as the 2017 single "Fix a Drink" and the album Real Friends shifted toward a lighter tone, while 2022's All In highlighted his rougher edges through partnerships that included Church. The 2023 release The Outlaw Side of Me mixed those approaches and brought in guests Dolly Parton and Brantley Gilbert.

Born Christopher Pierre Janson and raised in Missouri, he relocated to Nashville the summer after high-school graduation to chase a recording career. Equally capable on guitar and harmonica, he first attracted notice by writing for others, delivering the 2012 Tim McGraw hit "Truck Yeah" and later co-writing sessions with former Guns N' Roses members Duff McKagan and Izzy Stradlin. His initial single, "'Til a Woman Comes Along," appeared on BNA Records in 2010, yet the relationship ended after the label restructured. Signing with Tim McGraw's Bigger Picture Music Group, he issued "Better I Don't" in early 2013 under the guidance of producer Keith Stegall. A self-titled EP arrived later that year and spent one week at number 47 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart. Columbia Nashville followed with the EP Take It to the Bank in early 2014.

Still without label support, Janson put out "Buy Me a Boat" in early 2015. Airplay on the syndicated program The Bobby Bones Show pushed the track into the country-chart top ten, prompting a Warner Bros. contract in April and a CMT Music Awards slot that June. The full-length Buy Me a Boat arrived in October, accompanied by the singles "Power of Positive Drinkin'" and "Holdin' Her," both of which registered on Hot Country Songs while the album reached number four on the country tally and number 18 on the Billboard 200.

Early 2017 brought the single "Fix a Drink," which preceded the July EP of the same name and later surfaced on the September album Everybody. The track became a top-ten country hit, and the album opened at number seven on the country albums chart. February 2019 saw the release of the high-energy "Good Vibes," followed by the buoyant "Done"; both singles topped Country Airplay around the October arrival of Real Friends, Janson's third album, which peaked inside the country top 20. The holiday track "It Is Christmas" registered modest chart activity at the close of 2019.

All In, issued in 2022, pared the arrangements to a sinewy core and included duet appearances with Eric Church, Rhett Akins, and Travis Tritt. It followed the earnest single "Bye Mom," written as a tribute to his recently deceased mother. The June 2023 album The Outlaw Side of Me surveyed his full stylistic range, balancing the swagger of "Tap That" with the reflective power ballad "21 Forever," which featured Dolly Parton and Slash.
