Following the trail blazed by Sam Hunt and Thomas Rhett in their fusion of contemporary R&B with country, Jimmie Allen cultivates an equally glossy aesthetic that balances melody and grooves. That assured, polished approach elevated his first album, Mercury Lane, to number 11 on the country albums chart in 2018 and simultaneously drove the singles "Best Shot" and "Make Me Want To" to the top of Billboard's Country Airplay chart. The achievement positioned Allen as the most commercially successful Black artist in country music since Darius Rucker; he reinforced that standing with the 2021 EP Bettie James, which contained the original Noah Cyrus duet "This Is Us" and, in its expanded "Gold Edition," the Brad Paisley duet "Freedom Was a Highway," itself a Country Airplay number one. Those accomplishments earned Allen belated New Artist nominations from both the CMA Awards and the Grammys in 2021, the former of which he won, clearing the path for his second proper studio album, Tulip Drive, to arrive in summer 2022.

Born June 18, 1985, in Milton, Delaware, Jimmie Allen first sang during middle-school speech therapy sessions, an experience that soon ignited a lasting passion for music. He moved to Nashville in 2007 as an adult, determined to break into the country industry; after months living in his car, he secured songwriting contracts, one of which placed a composition in a Super Bowl advertisement. Still intent on performing, Allen sang and performed stand-up comedy, auditioned for America's Got Talent without advancing, and reached Hollywood week on the 2010 season of American Idol won by Scotty McCreery before being eliminated. He continued juggling various jobs in Nashville, inching closer to visibility with a minor role in a 2013 Taylor Swift soda commercial, until meeting producer and songwriter Ash Bowers in 2016. Allen signed with Stoney Creek Records, a BBR subsidiary, in August 2017 and issued "Blue Jean Baby," the lead single from his self-titled debut EP, which appeared late that year and was produced by Ash Bowers and Eric Torres. His first full-length project, Mercury Lane, titled after his childhood street, reached stores in October 2018 and debuted at number 11 on Billboard's Country Albums chart; "Best Shot" soon topped Country Airplay, followed in 2019 by "Make Me Want To."

Allen broadened his reach beyond country listeners by recording a cover of Lady Gaga's "Shallow" with Abby Anderson in 2019 and releasing the Noah Cyrus duet "This Is Us" in 2020. The latter track appeared on the July 2020 EP Bettie James, named for his late grandmother Bettie and father James. The Brad Paisley collaboration "Freedom Was a Highway" ascended to number one on Country Airplay in 2021, anchoring the June "Gold Edition" reissue of Bettie James. That same year Allen launched the Bettie James Fest in Milton, Delaware, published the children's book My Voice Is a Trumpet, and competed on season 30 of Dancing with the Stars. He also became the first Black solo artist to receive New Male Artist of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards, won New Artist of the Year at the CMA Awards, earned a Best New Artist nomination at the 64th Grammy Awards, and was named Outstanding New Artist at the 53rd NAACP Image Awards.

Jimmie Allen delivered his second proper studio album, Tulip Drive, in 2022. Named after the street where his grandmother resided, the expansive, pop-oriented set featured appearances by Jennifer Lopez, T-Pain, CeeLo Green, Katie Ohh, and Allen's son Aadyn; he promoted the project as an opening act on Carrie Underwood's Denim & Rhinestones Tour.
