Biography
Walker Hayes spent more than ten years attempting to penetrate the country mainstream before securing a Top Ten single in 2017 via “You Broke Up with Me.” The track exploded in popularity and lent its name to the parent album boom., which arrived six years after his initial full-length effort, Reason to Rhyme. That 2011 release had showcased his promise within a bro-country framework, whereas boom. blended modern R&B, contemporary country, hip-hop, and rock into something distinctly his own. He built on the momentum with the witty “Fancy Like,” which ascended to the summit of Billboard’s Country charts in 2021 and anchored his third album, Country Stuff the Album. Another chart entry followed in 2023 with “Good with Me,” featured on the concise New Money collection, before the EP Sober Thoughts surfaced in April 2024.
A native of Mobile, Alabama, Hayes entered the world on December 27, 1979. Throughout his childhood and teenage years he split his energies between music and athletics, ultimately earning a music degree from Birmingham-Southern College and later studying at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 2005 he and his wife relocated to Nashville so he could pursue a career as a professional musician. A song-publishing agreement came first, followed by a recording contract with Mercury Records after a demo prepared for Keith Urban caught the label’s attention; he soon transferred to Capitol Records. His debut single, “Pants,” reached number 60 on the Hot Country Songs chart in 2010, and Reason to Rhyme appeared the next year yet failed to register on any album tally.
During the ensuing period Hayes concentrated on songwriting, placing material with Colt Ford and Rodney Atkins in 2014. After Capitol released him, he took a job at Costco while continuing to write, issuing the single “Pimpin’ Joy” that same year to minimal notice. Shane McAnally brought him aboard SMACK/RareSpark in 2016, resulting in the two EPs 8Tracks, Vol. 1: Good Shit and 8Tracks, Vol. 2: Break the Internet. Monument Records signed Hayes in 2017 and issued “You Broke Up with Me,” which earned gold certification and paved the way for boom. in December of that year; the album entered the Top Country Albums chart at number six and reached number 37 on the Billboard 200.
Although boom. produced no immediate follow-up hits, Hayes eventually returned to the upper ranks. The nostalgic “‘90s Country” missed the Top 40 in 2018, as did the reflective “Don’t Let Her,” drawn from the 2019 release 8Tracks (Vol. 3): Black Sheep. The 2020 single “Trash My Heart” likewise made little impact. “Fancy Like” restored him to prominence in 2021, topping Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart and setting the stage for the June EP Country Stuff. He expanded that project into Country Stuff the Album, which arrived in January 2022 after the additional singles “U Gurl” and “AA.” Later that year the non-album track “Y’all Life” extended his streak of hits, succeeded by the gentler “Face in the Crowd.” Spearheaded by the radio favorite “Good with Me,” the eight-track mini-album New Money emerged the following year. With Sober Thoughts, released in 2024, Hayes confronted personal struggles while launching his subsequent tour.
