Biography
Brett Young crafts music that merges sleek contemporary pop textures with the heartfelt depth of modern country, having sharpened his skills on the West Coast prior to achieving breakthrough success in Nashville. His compositions explore sweeping feelings tied to existence, romance, and kinship, delivering powerful dramatic impact whether he draws on classic power-ballad traditions or opts for understated acoustic settings. Once a standout college baseball player, Young pivoted to music, reaping platinum rewards from his second full-length effort, Ticket to L.A., issued in 2018. He revisited selections from that project via The Acoustic Sessions in 2019 before adopting a more mature outlook on Weekends Look a Little Different These Days, released in 2021, which paved the way for Across the Sheets in 2023.
Born and raised in Orange County, California, Young first nurtured a passion for music and picked up guitar during his teenage years. While attending Calvary Chapel High School in Costa Mesa during the late 1990s, he assisted the worship leader with Friday-morning performances; when that leader was absent, Young stepped in and discovered his ability to command an audience. Sports remained his primary focus, however, as he excelled as a pitcher for the school team and drew major-league scouting interest, only for a severe elbow injury to curtail his collegiate baseball prospects and steer him back toward music. Inspired by Gavin DeGraw, he started composing material and showcasing his rich, soulful vocal style. Regular appearances at California listening rooms followed by 2007, along with the release of his debut self-titled EP. A second independent project, Make Believe, arrived in 2011, succeeded by On Fire in 2013. Over his initial decade, Young performed at prominent California spots such as the Troubadour, the Roxy, and the Viper Room while supporting acts including Colbie Caillat and Katy Perry.
Shifting emphasis to the country elements within his songwriting and sound, Young relocated from California to Nashville and marked the change with the EP Country in California. These new directions caught the ear of Big Machine Label Group, which offered him a recording contract. His first release for the label, the six-song EP Brett Young, surfaced in February 2016. The single “Sleep Without You” registered on both country and pop tallies, peaking at number 81 on the Billboard Hot 100. “In Case You Didn’t Know” became another success ahead of the full-length eponymous Big Machine debut in February 2017, which climbed to number two on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart and later earned platinum certification.
Young unveiled “Here Tonight” in September 2018 as the lead single from his next album, Ticket to L.A., which also featured the track “Chapters” with Gavin DeGraw. The collection ascended to the top of the U.S. Country Albums chart and entered the Top 20 on the Billboard 200. Young married his girlfriend Taylor Mills the following month, and the couple’s first daughter was born in November 2019; a second daughter arrived in July 2021.
In 2019 he issued the five-song EP The Acoustic Sessions, presenting stripped-down renditions of material from the Ticket to L.A. sessions. The 2020 single “Lady” was written for his wife and infant daughter, followed by the duet “I Do” alongside pop star Astrid S. Additional singles “Not Yet” and “You Got Away with It” appeared in early 2021. Later that year Young released the eight-song EP Weekends Look a Little Different These Days together with its acoustic counterpart, Weekends Look a Little Acoustic These Days. The reflective single “You Didn’t” reached the Billboard Hot 100, and he also published his debut children’s book, Love You, Little Lady, recounting a father’s observations of his daughter’s growth. He closed out 2021 with the holiday album Brett Young & Friends Sing the Christmas Classics.
Across the Sheets, arriving in 2023, spotlighted Young’s romantic leanings; he earned writing credits on seven of its eight tracks.
