Biography
LANCO first gained widespread attention by shaping glossy, upbeat country anthems that carried traces of classic rock and blues. Their breakthrough arrived when “Greatest Love Story” reached number one on the country chart in 2017 after serving as the theme for the Netflix series The Ranch. The following year the band’s debut album, Hallelujah Nights, entered the Billboard 200’s Top 20. Between full-length projects they kept a foothold on country radio with the 2019 single “What I See,” the track “Wild Again” from the 2021 EP Honky-Tonk Hippies, and a move from Sony’s Arista imprint to the independent Riser House label, which issued their fourth EP, Run, Run, Baby, in 2023.
The five-piece, whose name is short for Lancaster & Company, was assembled in 2013 by frontman Brandon Lancaster. Drummer Tripp Howell, guitarist Eric Steedly, keyboardist Jared Hampton, and bassist Chandler Baldwin completed the roster, with the musicians drawing roots from Georgia, Tennessee, and Kentucky. A random introduction at a Keith Urban concert between Lancaster and producer Jay Joyce (known for work with Eric Church and Little Big Town) led to Joyce signing the group to his publishing company and helming their self-titled debut EP. Late in 2015 LANCO joined the Sony Music Nashville roster through Arista Nashville, and the label released the six-song Extended Play in early 2016; three tracks overlapped with the prior EP, and the set spent one week at number 200 on the Billboard 200.
Picked up mid-run as the theme for The Ranch, which starred Ashton Kutcher, “Greatest Love Story” climbed to the summit of Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart and anchored the band’s first full-length, Hallelujah Nights, released in January 2018. That country chart-topper also reached number 20 on the Billboard 200. Later in 2018 the single “Born to Love You” cracked the country songs Top 20. LANCO stayed visible on the Country Airplay chart in 2019 via “Rival” and “What I See,” then concentrated on standalone releases such as “Near Mrs.” and “First Beer” for the next two years. The 2021 EP Honky-Tonk Hippies arrived after the group had parted ways with Arista earlier that year. They next offered the self-released heartland rocker “Low Class Lovers,” then aligned with Nashville’s Riser House, which put out Run, Run, Baby in October 2023.
