Biography
Florida native Michael Ray combines a commanding vocal presence with a talent for shaping energetic, modern country-rock material. He cultivated a dedicated regional audience across Southern Florida while achieving wider recognition as the 2012 winner of the CW reality series The Next: Fame Is at Your Doorstep. Following his victory, Ray secured a contract with Atlantic Nashville and scored his first Top Ten placement via the 2016 single “Think a Little Less.” That release and the relaxed 2018 track “One That Got Away” showcased his command of soulful grooves and pop melodies, yet the 2021 Higher Education EP returned emphasis to his deeper country origins. He sustained the shorter-form approach with 2023’s Dive Bars & Broken Hearts EP.
Born in Eustis, Florida, Ray first encountered music through his grandfather, a regional country and gospel musician who taught him guitar and supplied early performance opportunities by including him at shows in assisted-living homes and community centers. Although initially shaped by classic country figures such as Porter Wagoner, Merle Haggard, and Waylon Jennings, Ray expanded his listening during his teenage years to encompass Garth Brooks and the broader mix of rock and hip-hop heard on contemporary radio. After graduating high school in 2006, he resolved to pursue country music professionally.
Opting against an immediate move to Nashville, Ray assembled a band and maintained a steady circuit of performances throughout Southern Florida. His following grew steadily, then accelerated once a WPCV-97 Country DJ in Lakeland added his songs to regular rotation. Ray soon progressed to headlining the Orlando House of Blues and selling out dates across the state. His independently released 2010 debut reached veteran manager Tony Conway, who began guiding the artist toward a national platform. In 2012, Ray competed on The Next under the mentorship of Big & Rich’s John Rich, won strong audience support, and claimed the top prize. Afterward he signed a publishing agreement with Warner/Chappell and issued the 2014 hit single “Kiss You in the Morning.”
His first major-label album, Michael Ray, appeared in 2015 on Warner Music Nashville. The well-received project reached number four on the Country Albums chart and produced the further singles “Real Men Love Jesus” and “Think a Little Less.” Ray spent the following years touring extensively before returning to the studio with producer Scott Hendricks, whose credits include Blake Shelton, Brooks & Dunn, and Trace Adkins. The resulting sophomore set, Amos, arrived in 2018 and featured the Top 20 country single “Get to You”; it debuted at number five on Billboard’s Country Albums chart that June. Shortly thereafter “One That Got Away” became Ray’s second Country Airplay Top Ten hit, peaking at number three. “Her World or Mine” concluded the album’s chart activity in 2019 at number 22 on Country Airplay.
The non-album single “Whiskey and Rain” surfaced in 2020 and later anchored the August 2021 EP Higher Education. Two additional EPs, The Warehouse Sessions and The Bootlegger Sessions, followed in 2022 and presented alternate versions of earlier recordings. Ray resurfaced in 2023 with the dark-toned single “Get Her Back” and its companion EP Dive Bars & Broken Hearts, which also contained the duet “Spirits and Demons” with Meghan Patrick.
