Lynch first established himself in Nashville's mainstream through a polished and infectious bro-country approach before folding R&B and pop textures into his rural sound. His self-titled 2012 debut reached the top of the charts, after which a run of mid-decade successes followed, among them "Where It's At (Yep Yep)" and "Small Town Boy." Induction into the Grand Ole Opry preceded the January 2020 arrival of his fourth album, Tullahoma, which held him at number one on the Billboard Country charts; he stayed there with 2022's Blue in the Sky and examined single life on the 2023 set Killed the Cowboy.

Born and raised in Tullahoma, Tennessee, Lynch absorbed what he terms "the class of '89," citing Alan Jackson, Garth Brooks, and Clint Black, all of whom scored their initial national breakthroughs that year. In 2003 he relocated to Nashville for college and proximity to the genre's center, securing an apartment directly behind the Bluebird Café, long recognized as a proving ground for emerging songwriters. He eventually secured a slot at the venue and sharpened his craft through additional dates across the Southeast club circuit.

Discovery arrived in 2011 when Justin Moore's manager found Lynch on MySpace, resulting in management with L3 Entertainment, a publishing agreement with Super 98/The Song Factory, and a recording contract with Broken Bow Records. The label issued his first single, "Cowboys and Angels," in 2012; it peaked at number two on the Billboard country chart. Its parent album, Dustin Lynch, topped the Country Albums chart and yielded a second hit with "She Cranks My Tractor."

September 2014 brought the second album, Where It's At, which delivered three further singles including Lynch's first number-one country track, "Where It's At (Yep, Yep)." Momentum carried into "Seein' Red" and "Small Town Boy," both of which topped the Country Airplay chart and appeared on his third album, Current Mood, released in September 2017. After "Good Girl" also reached number one on Country Airplay, Lynch was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in September 2018. Early 2019 saw the three-song EP Ridin' Roads; its title track joined "Good Girl" on Tullahoma, the full-length successor to Current Mood. In 2021 Lynch re-recorded the Tullahoma track "Thinking 'Bout You" with MacKenzie Porter replacing original duet partner Lauren Alaina; the new version climbed to number two and paved the way for Blue in the Sky in 2022. The following year he teamed with producer Zach Crowell for Killed the Cowboy, a candid twelve-song collection exploring what it means to be single in one's thirties.
