Biography
Sam Hunt embodies an evolution within country music on both artistic and commercial fronts. Incorporating hip-hop phrasing alongside contemporary R&B grooves into his country-pop approach, he charts a course beyond the rowdy bro-country sound that dominated much of the 2010s. The blend first surfaced with the 2014 single "Leave the Light On," which scored a major hit and served as the initial entry in his long line of country chart-toppers. Its impact was surpassed by 2017's "Body Like a Back Road," a track that held the top position for months and established a new standard for weeks spent at number one. Dropped as a standalone release outside any album, "Body Like a Back Road" underscored how Hunt's ascent drew strength from skillful command of digital distribution. The song later anchored his second full-length project, the 2020 album Southside, which extended his run of Country Airplay number ones. That sequence advanced further in 2021 through "23," the opening single from his third album, while late 2022 delivered "Water Under the Bridge" as an additional preview and "Outskirts" followed in 2023.
Early on, Hunt had no intention of earning a living through performance. Born in Cedartown, Georgia, he distinguished himself in athletics with a focus on football. His high school quarterback tenure drew recognition, including a nomination for the Wendy's High School Heisman trophy, leading him to enroll at Middle Tennessee State University in 2003. Limited playing time across the 2003 and 2004 seasons prompted a transfer to the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2005, where he completed his degree in 2007. While at UAB he began self-teaching guitar and vocals, so after an unsuccessful 2008 tryout with the Kansas City Chiefs he chose to relocate to Nashville and chase a music career.
Hunt first gained attention in Nashville through songwriting, securing his breakthrough in 2012 by co-writing Kenny Chesney's chart-topping single "Come Over." Capitalizing on that foothold, he issued the single "Raised on It" from the 2013 mixtape Between the Pines, which built momentum for his performing career. Major songwriting placements followed in 2014 with Keith Urban's "Cop Car" and Billy Currington's "We Are Tonight," coinciding with his signing to MCA Nashville. The January deal preceded the August drop of the digital EP X2C. Shortly afterward the sleek, R&B-inflected country-pop single "Leave the Night On"—co-written with Josh Osborne and Shane McAnally—hit radio and quickly climbed to the summit of Billboard's Country Airplay chart while earning double platinum certification.
The single's strong performance prompted MCA to accelerate the launch of Montevallo, Hunt's debut full-length. Arriving October 27, 2014, the album entered at number three on Billboard's Top 200 and remained a chart presence for the subsequent two-and-a-half years. Sustained chart life stemmed from its steady production of major hits, beginning with "Take Your Time" reaching number one on Country Airplay in early 2015 and "House Party" following soon after. All three tracks maintained airplay through most of 2015, delaying the next single until September when "Break Up in a Small Town" became the fourth release; although it peaked at number two, the song outsold "House Party." During its run, Between the Pines was reissued to mark the one-year anniversary of Montevallo.
"Make You Miss Me," Montevallo's fifth single, kept Hunt on the airwaves into 2016, yet no new single appeared until "Body Like a Back Road." Upon its February 2017 arrival the track ruled Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart for 34 weeks, eclipsing the prior mark set by Florida Georgia Line's "Cruise" at 24 weeks, while also claiming three weeks atop Country Airplay. Such success led Hunt to delay both a follow-up album and any second single from it; "Downtown's Dead" finally surfaced in May 2018 and reached number 15 on Country Airplay. His Billboard-charting sophomore album Southside arrived in April 2020, encompassing "Downtown's Dead," "Kinfolks," "Body Like a Back Road," and the platinum-selling "Hard to Forget." The next year Hunt collaborated with indie pop artist Sasha Sloan on the single "When Was It Over?," before the rollicking, nostalgia-driven "Water Under the Bridge" appeared in 2022.
"Water Under the Bridge" initiated the rollout for Sam Hunt's third album, a sequence continued by the 2022 single "Start Nowhere" along with "Walmart," "Outskirts," and "Women in My Life," all arriving in 2023.
