Biography
Possessing a mature, resonant baritone and an instinctive feel for the tuneful country sounds of his youth, Chris Young advanced from his Nashville Star victory to genuine prominence in the Nashville music world within just a few years. He captured the 2006 reality competition, which delivered a recording agreement with RCA. Following an unhurried beginning, breakthrough arrived with his second album, 2009's The Man I Want to Be, anchored by the alluring hit "Gettin' You Home (The Black Dress Song)," his initial single to top the Billboard Country Airplay charts. Across the ensuing decade, further successes including "Tomorrow," "You," "Neon," "I'm Comin' Over," and "Losing Sleep" confirmed his standing as a classic crooner. That run of hits produced his 2017 induction into the Grand Ole Opry. He sustained momentum into the 2020s, guiding 2021's Famous Friends, which featured the title-track collaboration with Kane Brown, to number one on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart. Ahead of his following studio effort, 2024's Young Love & Saturday Nights, he released its David Bowie-referencing title track.
Grandson of former Louisiana Hayride performer Richard Yates, Young originates from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and first attracted widespread notice through his 2006 appearance on the Nashville Star television program. His vocal talent emerged in grade-school children's theater, and with complete family backing he immersed himself in musical study, focusing especially on country. By his senior year of high school he was already performing in Nashville-area clubs, and he issued a self-released debut album prior to graduation. Young pursued higher education at Belmont University in Nashville and later at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, all while maintaining roughly 150 live performances annually. He accepted a role leading the house band at Cowboy's in Arlington, Texas, where a persistent fan urged him to audition for Nashville Star.
He ultimately traveled to Houston for the audition, and the experience resulted in a contract with RCA Records. His first single, "Drinkin' Me Lonely," co-written with Larry Wayne Clark, appeared in 2006 and was followed later that year by the Buddy Cannon-produced album simply titled Chris Young. A second album, The Man I Want to Be, produced by James Stroud, arrived in 2009. His third release, 2011's Neon, did not achieve gold certification like its predecessor yet yielded "Tomorrow," a deeply emotional ballad that became his largest hit to that point, reaching number one on the Billboard country charts, entering the pop Top 40, and earning platinum status. "You," the album's second single, also topped the country charts, with "Neon" and "I Can Take It from There" supplying two additional hits.
Young issued his more upbeat fourth album, A.M., in fall 2013, led by the celebratory single "Aw Naw," which climbed to number 16 on the Billboard charts. A.M. generated two more country Top Ten entries with the gentler "Who I Am with You" and "Lonely Eyes," both charting in 2014. He returned in fall 2015 with "I'm Comin' Over," another Top Ten hit that also served as the title track for his fifth album, released that November. "Think of You," a duet with Cassadee Pope, followed to number two on Billboard's U.S. Hot Country chart, while the Vince Gill collaboration "Sober Saturday Night" reached number 31 later in the year. During the 2016 holiday season he released It Must Be Christmas, which peaked at number four on Billboard's Country Albums chart. His sixth album of original material, Losing Sleep, arrived in October 2017.
Young began unveiling tracks from a new project in 2019, when "Raised on Country" rose to number five on Billboard Country Airplay and "Drowning" reached number 25. He returned to number one in 2021 with "Famous Friends," the Kane Brown duet that led the charts and anchored the full-length Famous Friends, issued that August and topping the country chart while reaching number 13 on the Billboard 200. "Everybody Needs a Song," a collaboration with Old Dominion, appeared in May 2022 on the deluxe edition of Famous Friends. He opened 2023 with two new singles, the energetic "Looking for You" and the affectionate "All Dogs Go to Heaven." His subsequent single, "Young Love & Saturday Nights," incorporated the guitar riff from David Bowie's "Rebel Rebel" and functioned as the title track for his next studio album in early 2024.
