Biography
Craig Morgan distinguishes himself among country vocalists through an innate warmth and emotional directness, qualities that defined his signature success with the chart-topping single “That’s What I Love About Sunday.” The track held the summit of the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart for four weeks in 2005, opening a stretch in which Morgan regularly visited the Country Top Ten with material that shifted between buoyant country-pop and rock-inflected numbers and more introspective ballads. His run of hits diminished in the early 2010s, yet sustained activity eventually produced renewed visibility in 2019 when “The Father, My Son, and the Holy Ghost” returned him to the charts after a five-year absence. That momentum prompted the 2020 album God, Family, Country, later expanded by four additional tracks for a 2022 deluxe edition that introduced the single “How You Make a Man.”
Born in Kingston Springs, Tennessee, Morgan grew up immersed in music as the son of a working country bassist and began performing as a youngster. Professional aspirations developed slowly; after turning eighteen he first served as an EMT before enlisting in the U.S. Army, where he continued to write and sing during off-duty hours. Following a decade of service he relocated to Nashville, supporting himself through various jobs while recording demos until Atlantic Records offered a contract.
The label released Craig Morgan in 2000. Buddy Cannon and Norro Wilson produced the set, which yielded three singles yet only the opening track, “Something to Write Home About,” reached the Billboard Country Top 40. Morgan subsequently moved to Broken Bow, where “Almost Home,” issued late in 2002, became his initial Country Top Ten entry by peaking at number six and paved the way for the March 2003 album I Love It. Follow-up singles “Every Friday Afternoon” and “Look at Us” both registered inside the Top 40.
My Kind of Livin’, his third full-length project, climbed to number seven on the country albums chart in 2005 behind its sole number-one single, “That’s What I Love About Sunday.” The release marked Morgan’s first Gold certification and his commercial high point, aided by “Redneck Yacht Club,” which rose to number two on the country chart and number forty-five on the pop side, plus the number-twelve hit “I Got You.” Little Bit of Life followed swiftly in 2006, peaking at number thirteen on the strength of its title track at number seven, “Tough” at number eleven, and “International Harvester” at number ten, earning a second Gold certification.
A Greatest Hits collection wrapped his Broken Bow tenure in February 2008. Morgan then joined BNA Records and issued That’s Why that October; the album reached number eight on Billboard’s Country Albums chart and contained the Top Ten singles “Love Remembers” (number nine) and “Bonfire” (number four), along with “This Ain’t Nothin’,” which peaked at number thirteen in early 2010. After departing BNA in 2011 he aligned with Black River Entertainment, releasing This Ole Boy in 2012. That project attained number five, while its title track climbed to number thirteen.
The Journey (Livin’ Hits) compilation surfaced in 2013 and featured the new track “Wake Up Lovin’ You,” which reached number fourteen on the Country Airplay chart. A Whole Lot More to Me arrived in June 2016 yet generated minimal radio response. In 2019 the single “The Father, My Son, and the Holy Ghost” advanced to number twenty-five on Billboard’s Country Songs chart after Blake Shelton publicly endorsed it online. Morgan subsequently re-signed with Broken Bow, and the song anchored the 2020 album God, Family, Country. A deluxe edition containing four new songs, among them “How You Make a Man,” was issued in November 2022.
