Biography
Before launching a joint songwriting and performing partnership, the California pair Mike Brewer and Tom Shipley had each pursued separate paths through the folk club circuit of 1960s Los Angeles. H.P. Lovecraft recorded their composition “Keeper of the Seven Keys,” which also surfaced on the duo’s 1968 debut album Down in L.A. Jerry Garcia, Mike Bloomfield, and Nicky Hopkins contributed guest performances to the follow-up, Weeds. Airplay restrictions prompted by its marijuana-themed lyrics failed to prevent the surprise Top Ten hit “One Toke Over the Line” from reaching listeners in 1971. After that breakthrough, Brewer and Shipley relocated to rural Missouri, yet diminishing public interest eventually prompted the dissolution of their partnership in 1979. Brewer issued the solo album Beauty Lies in 1983. Prompted by a Kansas City radio station, Brewer & Shipley staged a reunion concert in 1989 and thereafter resumed occasional touring. Nearly twenty years after their previous release, the duo returned with Shanghai in 1995. Heartland appeared two years later. Mike Brewer died on December 17, 2024, at the age of 80.
