Biography
Among the foremost German conductors of the twentieth century, Bruno Walter earned distinction as an authoritative interpreter of Mahler while also distinguishing himself as a skilled pianist, an extensive recording artist, and an active composer through the first portion of his career. Born into a Jewish family in Berlin in 1876, he displayed an early affinity for music that prompted enrollment at the Stern Conservatory in that city at the age of eight. There he received instruction in piano from Heinrich Ehrlich, in music theory from Ludwig Bussler, and in composition from Robert Radecke. His public debut as a pianist took place when he was nine.
A performance by the celebrated Hans von Bülow and the Berlin Philharmonic in 1889 sparked his interest in conducting. Shortly afterward he obtained a post as vocal coach at the Cologne Opera, where he first appeared on the podium in 1894. He soon moved to the Hamburg Opera to serve as chorus director and assistant to Gustav Mahler, an association that left a lasting imprint on his artistic outlook and podium manner. When that engagement ended in 1896, Mahler helped arrange his appointment as second conductor at the Stadttheater in Breslau. Walter led performances in Riga, Latvia, from 1898 to 1900, then accepted a five-year contract with the Royal Opera of Berlin. He returned to Vienna in 1901 for a second collaboration with Mahler at the Court Opera.
Walter conducted his Symphony No. 1 in Vienna in 1909, and his profile rose sharply the following year after a successful series of concerts in Prague, Rome, and at Covent Garden. Concluding that his primary gifts lay in conducting, he abandoned composition. At Mahler’s widow’s request, he led the premieres of Das Lied von der Erde and Symphony No. 9 after the composer’s death in 1911. Between 1913 and 1922 he resided in Munich as Royal Bavarian Music Director and head of the Bavarian State Opera.
His United States debut occurred in 1923 with the New York Symphony Orchestra. Until the outbreak of World War II he remained active in Berlin, Paris, and London. During the 1930s he appeared both as accompanist to Lotte Lehmann and as conductor with the Vienna Philharmonic. Following the start of World War II in 1939 he settled permanently in Beverly Hills and thereafter centered his work in America, collaborating with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Minneapolis Symphony, and New York organizations that included the New York Philharmonic, the NBC Symphony, and the Metropolitan Opera. After the war he resumed engagements with European orchestras in the late 1940s and early 1950s. His 1952 recording of Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde with the Vienna Philharmonic proved especially successful, and his discs with the New York Philharmonic from those years received high critical regard.
A heart attack in 1957 obliged him to curtail his activities as a traveling guest conductor. In his final years he recorded music by Mozart, Brahms, and Beethoven with the Columbia Symphony Orchestra, employing a more reflective and seasoned interpretive approach than in earlier efforts. Bruno Walter died of a heart attack at his home in Beverly Hills in 1962.
