Biography
Hans Knappertsbusch lived from 1888 to 1965 and earned acclaim as one of the foremost interpreters of German Romantic repertoire during the middle decades of the twentieth century. Although music formed a central part of his childhood, his parents rejected the idea of a professional path in that field. He therefore pursued philosophy at Bonn University until 1908, when he enrolled at the Cologne Conservatory to train in conducting under Fritz Steinbach.
His professional start came as a staff conductor at the Mülheim-Ruhr Theater from 1910 to 1912, followed by an appointment as opera director in his native city from 1913 to 1918. Summers spent assisting Siegfried Wagner and Hans Richter at the Bayreuth Festival proved equally formative; those experiences led to his involvement in the Netherlands Wagner Festivals of 1913 and 1914. After moving to Leipzig in 1918 and then to Dessau the following year, he was appointed music director of the latter city in 1920. Bruno Walter’s departure from Munich in 1922 prompted Knappertsbusch’s selection as that city’s music director.
Colleagues noted his relaxed temperament and absence of the competitive drive common among rising musicians of his stature. Preferring to remain in Munich, he never achieved the international visibility attained by many peers, yet local audiences valued his work enough to grant him a lifetime conducting post. Refusal to comply with several Nazi directives cost him that position in 1936. He led notable performances of “Salome” at Covent Garden in both 1936 and 1937, appeared as a guest conductor in other German cities, and otherwise kept a modest profile throughout the Nazi period. Following his dismissal he relocated to Vienna, where he appeared regularly with the Philharmonic and at the Vienna State Opera. The 1938 annexation of Austria again affected his activities, though he largely avoided further conflict with authorities.
Audiences came to associate him with expansive, magisterial readings of Bruckner and with the older, deliberate approach to Wagner. He was known to curtail or skip rehearsals, a habit his players attributed not to indolence but to confidence in his conception and trust in the ensemble. Consequently his performances retained an element of spontaneity rather than strict adherence to preconceived plans.
When the Bayreuth Festivals resumed in 1951, he collaborated closely with Wieland Wagner on orchestral preparation even though he disliked the director’s austere scenic innovations. His most celebrated recording remains the stereo version of Wagner’s “Parsifal” captured live at Bayreuth.
