Formed in 1991, the trio By Divine Right brought together Jose Contreras on guitar and vocals, Brendan Canning handling bass and vocals, along with Mark Goldstein on drums and vocals. Their early output included the obscure cassette Buffet of the Living Dead plus spots on multiple compilations before the self-titled full-length debut arrived in 1995. Some, a four-song cassette, came next, followed by the 1997 release of All Hail Discordia on Nettwerk, where Brenndan McGuire served as producer and engineer. Bless This Mess appeared in February 1999, coinciding with a tour alongside the Tragically Hip. Good Morning Beautiful, the subsequent album from Linus Entertainment, emerged in 2001 following 14 months in the studio. Three years later, after moving toward a harder musical style, Sweet Confusion marked their fifth album overall and debut effort for Spin Art in 2004.
