Biography
In 2004 the indie rock trio Plants and Animals took shape in Montreal, built around Warren Spicer on guitar and vocals, Matthew Woodley on drums, percussion, and vocals, and Nicolas Basque on guitar, bass, and vocals. Their music moves across genres by fusing roots-oriented, acoustic-driven folk and country with touches of classic and progressive rock. The self-titled debut appeared in 2005, after which the band issued the EP With/Avec in 2007 and then the full-length Parc Avenue in 2008; that album reached the shortlist for the 2008 Polaris Music Prize and earned a 2009 Juno Award nomination. La La Land followed in 2010 and likewise appeared on the Polaris Music Prize shortlist. The End of That, released by Secret City Records in 2012, placed its title track in the closing credits of the 2013 film Drinking Buddies. In 2016 the band delivered its fourth studio long-player, Waltzed in from the Rumbling, once more through Secret City.
