During his Vancouver upbringing, Dan Mangan spent considerable time exploring his parents’ record collection, with particular focus on the albums of Nick Drake and the Beatles. These encounters established folk and pop as his central influences, which he merged while composing his own material throughout his teenage years. At age twenty he issued an acoustic EP as his first solo release, followed two years later by the full-length Postcards and Daydreaming. Once that album reached American listeners, Mangan expanded his touring schedule and grew his audience. He resurfaced in 2009 with the sophomore album Nice, Nice, Very Nice, which earned a place on the Polaris Music Prize shortlist. Two years afterward came the Juno Award-winning Oh, Fortune, whose more developed songwriting and arrangements were shaped by producer Colin Stewart of Black Mountain and Cave Singers. Early 2015 brought Club Meds, Mangan’s fourth studio album and the first issued under the Dan Mangan + Blacksmith name.
