Biography
Hannah Georgas crafts songs with a warm and vulnerable vocal presence alongside gently quirky melodies that bridge melancholy indie rock and more expansive, anthemic adult pop. Her first album, This Is Good, appeared in 2010 and earned her a Juno Award nomination for Songwriter of the Year, an honor repeated for her self-titled 2012 release. Aaron Dessner of the National, for whom Georgas has also supplied backing vocals, produced her fourth studio album, All That Emotion, issued in 2020. The self-produced follow-up I'd Be Lying if I Said I Didn't Care arrived in 2023 and continued to balance expansive pop-rock energy with intimate expression.
Newmarket, Ontario, is where Georgas was born and raised; while still in high school she played in a band alongside Tim Oxford, who would later join Arkells. She later moved to British Columbia for studies at the University of Victoria, where she continued developing her music and issued her debut EP, The Beat Stuff, on the Ontario label Hidden Pony in 2009. The same imprint released This Is Good the following year; the album earned a long-list spot for the Polaris Music Prize and brought Juno nominations in the categories of Best New Artist and Songwriter of the Year. Several of her compositions found placement in television shows such as Defying Gravity and Degrassi: The Next Generation as well as in prominent advertising campaigns.
After signing with Dine Alone, Georgas delivered her self-titled second album in 2012, which collected additional Juno nominations for Songwriter of the Year and Alternative Album of the Year. She toured in support of City and Colour and Sara Bareilles, then released For Evelyn—named after her grandmother—in June 2016 on the same label. After writing and demoing material at her Toronto residence, she began tracking her fourth album in mid-2018 during sessions in upstate New York with Aaron Dessner. While completing the record she issued the covers EP Imprints to mark International Women's Day 2019; the collection featured Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of Lucius, the Weather Station's Tamara Lindeman, and singer Emily King. That year she also toured as a backing vocalist with the National, and All That Emotion appeared in September 2020 on Brassland and Arts & Crafts. The companion releases All That Emotion Versions, featuring the National's Matt Berninger, This Is the Kit's Kate Stables, and additional guests, and All That Emotion: Acoustic both surfaced in 2021.
For her next album Georgas served as lead producer for the first time, resulting in the more personally candid and musically striding I'd Be Lying if I Said I Didn't Care. The sessions included contributions from instrumentalists James McAlister of Sufjan Stevens and Ester Drang and Gabe Wax of the War on Drugs and Soccer Mommy, along with co-production from Sean Sroka of Ten Kills the Pack and an assortment of analog recording gear. The album was released in August 2023 on Lucy Rose's Real Kind Records and Arts & Crafts.
